PRETORIA, South Africa – Landon Donovan scored in the first minute of stoppage time off a rebound, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.
With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination, Jozy Altidore was stopped on a breakaway by goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. Donovan hustled in and kicked in the rebound to win Group C Wednesday.

It would be neat to win in a sport that no Americans like, just to make the rest of the world feel their intrinsic inferiority. When they’re handed that cup they can say, “Meh, we don’t really like soccer.”
The reason soccer is the 82nd ranked sport in the US is because there are 81 sports that are better. Those other countries just don’t have it so good.

Okay, so lurker is trying to further denigrate me by saying I’m a child and where has the reporter hurt me. What’s funny to me is I make a statement about the only thing that ticks me off is how the rest of the worlds press (and some soccer maniacs here) constantly puts America down because we don’t watch soccer. Lurker says he’s never read that and I point out to him where that’s happening. Instead of saying okay, I see the example and you can have your opinion, he denigrates my opinion and calls me a child and thin skinned. In reality, he’s the child and also thin skinned because he can’t stand someone saying something negative about a sport he most likely loves.

In 1980 the country was down on itself. Americans seemed to have lost pride in their country. The Iranian hostage crisis was dragging on and President Carter (until recently considered the worst president ever, now the 2nd worst behind BHO) proved to be weak and not capable of dealing with Iran, nor was he capable of bringing the US out of a recession.
Then a hockey team inspired the nation. A bunch of college kids beat the mighty Soviets during the Lake Placid Wintergames. It sparked a turn about for the country that subsequently elected Ronald Reagan to lead America out of the doldrums, and under his leadership (boy do we miss that today don’t we?) America once again became that Shining City on a Hill.
Now a team of soccer players are proving, not just to the world, but to their own country, that they belong. That they can take on the world. Will they win the World Cup? That is a bigger challenge than most can recognize. But today’s performance by Team USA should instill pride in every American, soccer fan or not.
With the lack of leadership in the Whitehouse, the policies and laws that are forced down the throat of the American people (Health Care anyone?), Americans can look to, of all things, a soccer team, THEIR soccer team, to give them pride, joy, and hope. Not the ‘changey hopey’ kind, but real hope, in a more positive future. A future that hopefully will bring us another Reagan, so that once again America will be that Shinging City on a Hill.
Ghana beat the US in 2006, so I don’t think the US will be taking them lightly, in fact, they might have a bit of revenge on their minds.
I know. I was looking at the standings and where it should have had T for Tie it was a D and for the life of me it took me forever to figure out it meant Draw. DoubleplusDuh.
I see NASCAR threads here all the time but never post in them. NASCAR doesn’t interest me at all. For the life of me I can’t see why anyone would want to see someone drive in an oval 500 times, unless they are wanting to see wrecks. But I don’t go and proclaim my apathy to the sport on those threads.
Yes but those sports aren’t the loathsome and depraved threats to virtue, decency and the American way of life that European kickball is.
Despite my strong libertarian inclinations, I believe we need to criminalize it. I want to vomit when I drive past parks and see children who should be playing baseball, instead committing acts of soccer.
I’d make a first offense a misdemeanor, but with stiff fines. Subsequent offenses would get prison terms. Adults who encourage children to engage in soccer would also be subject to prosecution...it would be kinda like a morals charge.
