I actually think Jon Stewart is a lot of fun to be honest. He’s done a lot of hilarious episodes.

Every President since Nixon has had a plan to reduce “dependence” on foreign oil and none have worked. Except Reagan; he had the good sense to let the markets work.
To: Rhonda Robinson
Not surprisingly, President Bush [w] did a lot to reduce foreign dependence— at least upon Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern powers.
Bush changed US consumption patterns from Middle East sources to North American sources.
OUr #1 and #2 suppliers are now Canada and Mexico. That is directly due to the oil experience of Cheney and Bush. It is also something which Obama is working to undermine by making environmental arguments against Canadian oil.

The DoE’s reason for being created was to help the US become more energy independent. What has been the trend since its creation?

Gee, you think nuclear power might help? Nah, the limousine liberals squashed that back in the 70’s (many of whom are now has-beens).

Unfortunately, the idiot author comes to the same wrong conclusion that has resulted in our continued dependence of foreign oil.
Its about time that Obama and other leading politicians stop making fools of the American people and finally do what theyve been promising for decades: develop a strategy to become energy independent by exploiting alternative energy resources.
This might be fine if there were true alternatives to oil. It's not going to happen anytime soon and we will continue to be dependent on foreign oil. Simply change "alternative" to "domestic" and I would agree. We need to use our own resources instead of putting them out of reach through idiotic energy policies.

I've seen this video about Oil dependence with Jon Stewart. I dislike Stewart as much as anyone. As one other post has stated, a stopped watch is correct twice a day. But Stewart has stumbled onto the truth and has the freedom (or whatever) to make the point that a lot has been said about this by various presidents but next to nothing done.
The whole energy issue doesn't get enough attention and what the network news does present to the public is pure garbage. It's just bad information from a group of journalist who either don't understand the energy issue or don't have the ability to understand it.
Case in point. Recently NBC news was doing a story on the subject and they got Tom Brokaw out of mothballs for the segment. So who does he have as a guest? Why none other than Thomas Friedman of the NY Times. Friedman has absolutely no knowledge of the energy issues. He has no background in the energy industry or any academic background in science or engineering. But he's the guest! Give me a FN break! If NBC was doing a show on heart disease, it would enlist as a guest a heavyweight from one of the leading heart institutes with an MD and great credentials. So why in the area of energy are we expected to give any credence to the buffoonish Tom Friedman of the NY Times?
This is what I mean when I say the public doesn't understand the energy issues and that it's possible to fool them time and time again.
Stewart is an AH but on this subject he's correct. Of course he has no suggestions as to a solution and you wouldn't expect it from him.

Stewart is a smarmy, stinky celeb who thinks he's an intellectual.
He'll say this today, but when actual drilling proposals are on the table by someone like Palin, he'll turn on her and say she's an idiot.
Stewart's as sick as Bill Maher.

There are only two things we could do to achieve energy independence: (1) develop nuclear for the majority of our electrical needs (all minus hydro supply), and (2) develop synthetic oil using our coal reserves. We would end up spending less per Kw of electricity but more per gallon of gas under this approach. Nowhere in this plan is there any thought of spending billions directly or indirectly through tax credits for solar or ethanol. If we are serious we will accept $3.50 to $4.00 a gallon for gas to achieve synthetic (cleaner) transportation fuel. This would permit us to use natural gas as our primary heating and cooking fuel. Drilling for oil would have to be a piece of this plan to offset the full cost of synthetic fuel. At this point, I don’t see anyone in the Dem party willing to sell this idea. Rather, I see the Dem party foursquare against it. So while the comediene is funny, he doesn’t identify why politics will not allow a rational answer to an identified need. It is staring us in the face, yet we cannot move because of the enviro hustlers.

“talking about making the country energy independent, but doing exactly nothing”
It’s worse - they work AGAINST drilling for American oil!
