Sarah Palin says recreational pot smoking is "relatively speaking a minimal problem" in America.
...
"I think we need to prioritize our law enforcement efforts," she said. "If somebody's gonna smoke a joint in their house and not do anybody any harm, then perhaps there are other things our cops should be looking at to engage in and try to clean up some of the other problems we have in society."
Allen St. Pierre, the director of NORML, which supports liberalizing drug laws, said Palin's position on pot is perfectly in line with her identity as a politician.
"If you're a populist as she appears to be, it's maybe not that surprising," he told AOL News in a phone interview today.

Care to speculate on what the “occasional” pot smoker has stored in his lungs and done to his brain ? (i.e. changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine , etc)

Well don’t leave us in suspense, what exactly are the negative (antisocial?) behavioral aspects that we can expect to see (and try to avoid the typical correlation/causation things).
The several guys I know who are both without initiative and pot smokers lacked initiative long before they got into the weeds.
On the other hand, I know a few very high (pun absolutely intended) achievers who are regular pot smokers.
It is the notion that everything can be boiled down to one size fits all is what I find odd.
In other words, you commit a crime under the influence of drugs ....

So any cigarette smoker shown to be smoking while driving and causing an accident would be subject to the system of justice outlined in your post?
Count me in.
Can we beat them to a pulp just for tossing their butts out of their cars into the streets?
Of course you can always claim that. The officer will testify against you saying that you showed signs of being under the influence of marijuana or not, depending on the integrity of the officer and situation.
What “solid” facts are those might I ask? My point was that the first drugs anyone ever does are usually cigrettes and alcohol, and then everything else. Some skip the cigarettes and go straight for alcohol. That is why it is silly to call it the gateway when it is never the first. Second these statistics are always based on addicts and what they have to say which is not a good way to base statistics on since most addicts will do anything and everything to stay high including huffing common household cleaners That is why this is silly. Addicts are addicts and nothing and no one can save them from themselves. That is what the WOD tries to do and much like prohibition it has only made things far more profitable and very violent.
That smells a bit like BS to me. I guess it depends on what you mean by "achievers" .
The data base of people involved in extensive studies who have been smoking 3 or 4 joints a week for 20 years is just not that high, but preliminary studies are not particularly promising vis a vis long term health effects (mental or physical). But what the hell , if we legalize it we may get to watch lots of stoned out potheads negotiate the nation's highways in creative ways (not unlike boozers). I think that would be a blast.
If they had so much nicotine that it impaired judgment, then yes. So that would also cover twenty nicotine patches stuck to your body at once when you crashed.
I’ve never heard of such a thing, but you brought it up. Not bad thinking, dmz.
Legalizing Marijuana will bring us to this demise a lot quicker.

I can’t help the smell where you are. You may want to check your shoes.
It is a FR cottage industry to discount as BS another’s experience that doesn’t square with your own. I’m OK with that, too. I’m not trying to sell you anything, just sharing a few personal anecdotes. What you do with them is up to you.
The smokers are under the influence of a stimulant.
Hang ‘em high, if they cause an accident with a butt in their hands, just like you suggested for drinkers and other druggies. It’s matters not if the substance was the cause of the accident.
And yes, I’m a tad tongue in cheek in this discussion.
Try explaining that to some who poohoo NOT legalizing illegal drugs! Perhaps those ADVOCATING the legalization of marijuana are already contestant for the Jerry Springer show and don't realize it yet. Regular marijuana use makes you the DULLER “knife in the drawer”.

Having smoked pot rather intensely for a while, I'm opining from personal experience. Its not just your depth perception while partaking, its you cognitive abilities afterwards, your depth perception, your recovery times, your affected motiviations, your acuity of thought, your short term memory, etc.
All anti -intuitive anecdotes aside, I think we can agree its basically a drug that directly affects and alters the neurons in the brain. Not a trivial indulgence, IMO.
Alcohol is a beverage. A cold beer or a glass on wine isn’t going to cause any problems.
I never made that contention.
But, whatever problems we have with alcohol are going to be magnified with legalize marijuana and that is the last thing this nation needs.

Well, that’s why I asked (see question mark as end of my question that you quoted).
You have several times suggested that marijuana is a gateway drug, and my question was simply, do you think that the first substance abuse these folks experienced was marijuana?
I’m not looking for a gotcha, I just disagree as to the gateway drug ... I turned 12 in 1970, prime reefer days, but I and all the kids I knew were drinking beer and boones farm apple wine years before we got into reefer.
I do understand your point about not needing any more impaired drivers on the road, but that is separate and distinct from the gateway drug statement you are making.
In many cases, yes. And, we don't need any more legal substance that will serve as gateway drugs.
Why would you think legalizing marijuana will not diminish the quality of life in our nation?
*How many people are you willing to see die so you or some other loser can get high?*
Won’t somebody think about the children! Waaaah!
By gad, sir, we better ban alcohol so less people die!
And radios! People sometimes fiddle with those while they drive! And Cell phones, too!
You’d make a good liberal. I hear the Kos kids need posters.
In Federalist 10 Madison spends the entire essay defining liberty and how government and especially FACTIONS (be they political or Religious etc.) should not be able to use Government Power to limit Individual Liberty WHEN that liberty does not harm or interfere with another's liberty.
Sarah is waaay ahead of most Freepers who cannot grasp that concept!
