UAE requests modifications on Rafale to buy them - French DM

16 June 2010 PARIS -- French defense minister Herve Morin said Wednesday the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has requested technical modifications to purchase Rafale military jets, asserting the deal was at its final phases.

French media quoted Morin as saying the French and UAE governments were discussing the modifications.

He said the "deal is in the framework of completion." Morin did not elaborate.

Morin said the cost of modifications were less than two billion euros, contrary to what the media were reporting that modifications would cost 4-5 billion euros.

The UAE has been considering the replacement of its Mirage 2000 fleet with 60 Rafale jets. The UAE requested special modifications to include more powerful engine and sophisticated radar.

France is trying to market its new Rafale jet and is approaching many countries to sell the airplane. The Rafale has not been sold yet.
