But for a few well-placed, freedom-loathing, wretched scoundrels (translate: Democratic members of Congress and their allies in Washington), anyone and everyone familiar with the DISCLOSE Act opposes it.
The DISCLOSE Act is the Obama-Pelosi-Reid legislative response to the Citizens United decision allowing nonprofit organizations, corporations and labor unions to pay for ads opposing or supporting candidates.
Let me be clear: the Citizens United decision will help challengers to incumbents because the campaign finance rules were written by incumbents, and are therefore rigged for incumbents.
My friends at the Free Speech Coalition prepared this good summary of the bill as it was introduced. The bill targets free speech.
The National Rifle Association was stellar in opposition to the attempt by Congress to regulate grassroots lobbying when Congress amended the K Street lobbying rules a few years back. In fact, the NRA was critical in persuading certain Democrats, including Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, to ensure the grassroots provisions were kept out of the lobbying bill.
Democrats knew that if they could buy off the NRA, they stood a better chance of passing the DISCLOSE Act.
Sadly, the NRA has sold us out on the DISCLOSE Act, and has obtained its own exemption.
Washington politicians engage in disgraceful horse-trading over all sorts of things. Now, with the help of the NRA, our speech, association and press freedoms are open to bidding.
Politicians make strange bedfellows. This is why I strongly support the line item veto!

On June 14, 2010, Democratic leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives pledged that H.R. 5175 would be amended to exempt groups like the NRA, that meet certain criteria, from its onerous restrictions on political speech.

The NRA is a gun rights marketing organization. It leaves the heavy lifting to other smaller groups who have more fire in their belly.

The NRA is not being inconsistent with their historic practices here — they’ve ALWAYS been inconsistent on support for the CONSITUTION, and they’ve supported the EXPEDIENT POLITICAL candidate that, at the moment, has a record indicating they support gun rights. Often, that appears to be Democrats, the likes of which are Harry Reid or John Murtha. Give me a break.
Just as many of my naive pro-life friends discovered during the ObamaCare debate earlier this year, there is NO SUCH THING as a pro-life Democrat, so there is NO SUCH THING as a pro-gun Democrat. Unfortunately, the NRA cares more about their political manuevering than about the actual 2nd Amendment and it’s REAL meaning. Otherwise, they COULD NOT support candidates who would choose Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker, orHarry Reid as Senate Majority Leader. Their anti-gun, anti-2nd Amendment agenda DRIVES all the Dems, no matter what.
Please, if you are in the NRA, cancel your membership, demand a refund, and join Gun Owners of America. (GunOwners.org) THEY are for real.

I’m not a member, but they’re a good organization. The action has been at the state level in recent years.
I’m a member, and I don’t intend on quitting over this. The NRA has done much over the years, and we likely wouldn’t have a second amendment if it weren’t for them. They are a single issue organization that tries to keep as many democrats on board as they can, just for times like we are having right now. They are not in line with everyone’s conservative ideals, and never will be. I also am a member of GOA, but they don’t wield the clout the NRA does.

I've been a NRA member now for forty years and I would say that your statement is pretty true today. However, without the NRA we would have lost our guns years ago.
All Floridians who are interested in preserving their RKBA should at least join the Unified Sportsman of Florida which is the state level NRA affiliate that has done the heavy lifting here in Florida for the past twenty-five years or so.

Here in Virginia, we have VCDL. They’ve done a remarkable job.
