Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.
Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.
Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.
"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."
In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.
The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.
"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."
So was Ronald Reagan. What a pathetic attempt to smear
Hmmmm, “democrat” is all of the sudden a dirty word...snort!
It doesn’t matter at this point; Harry Reid got to go! President Reagan was once a Democrat but he will be remember as one of the greatest president of this nation and represent the Republican Party; conservative that is.
Lots of misinformed democrats finally saw the true way to happiness and freedom to live their life as they saw fit.
Angle has certainly made some missteps, but this is not one of them.
In fact, I hear the senator they’ve got now is a registered Democrat...
So apparently, that doesn’t harm one’s “electability” in Nevada, after all!
I was once a registered democrat, but never a liberal.
So was Ronald Reagan.
So was Ronald Reagan. What a pathetic attempt to smear
I agree.
I agree.
True, but that was when being a democrat was like being a moderate Republican today. She wasn't a Republican until 1997. She stayed a democrat during the Clinton years, right? It's one thing to be agnostic and not vote at all, but to help the other side get elected and register as one of them is something else IMO.
Having said all that, given the fact she voted for Reagan - as a democrat - means she is not all bad and, in fact, I think this will help her, not hurt her, with former Reid voters.
Will the same apply to Kagel??
Oh my goodness. Perhaps while these guys are digging around in records from the 80’s they could find the idiot in chief’s Occidental College, Harvard Law review, and Selective Service records.
I used to be a registered Democrat.
Then “Don’t ask, don’t tell” came along...
So? C. S. Lewis was once an atheist.
“Recovering Democrat” is the term.
We’ve all made mistakes.
And I wear that Recovering_Democrat status as a badge of HONOR.
Angle was a registered Republican until 1984. when she
She switched to the Democratic party in 1984
She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.
The article explains why she switched to Democrat.
It was because she ran the campaign of a Conservative Democrat.
It also says she supported Reagan and voted for him both elections.
Sharron is a conservative and always has been, regardless of her party.
Her political affilliation may have changed for one reason or another throughout the years, but her ideology hasn’t.
This just shows she is a conservative first, and a Republican second.
LOL. Good one.
