Can The One Drop the Buzzer-Beating No. 23 Act? (even Maureen Dowd is criticizing The Messiah)
New York Times ^ | 6/15/10 | Maureen Dowd

Of the many exciting things about Barack Obama’s election, one was the anticipation of a bracing dose of normality in the White House.

America had been trapped for eight years with the Clintons’ marital dysfunction disastrously shaping national events and then trapped for another eight with the Bushes’ Oedipal dysfunction disastrously shaping international events. And before that, L.B.J. and Nixon had acted pretty nutty at times.

President Obama was supposed to be a soothing change. He had a rough childhood. Michelle once told a friend that “Barack spent so much time by himself that it was like he was raised by wolves.” But he seemed to have come through exceptionally well adjusted. “His aides from the Senate, the presidential campaign, and the White House routinely described him with the same words: ‘psychologically healthy,’ ” writes Jonathan Alter in “The Promise,” a chronicle of Obama’s first year in office.

Is she totally insane? This is as crazy as anything ever written or spoken by a human being. Totally out of touch with reality.

Is she totally insane?

That's a rhetorical question, right?

“His aides from the Senate, the presidential campaign, and the White House routinely described him with the same words: ‘psychologically healthy,’

Translation: He's got major issues, but we're covering for him.

Think about it: when was the last time your friends, your co-workers or your spouse declared that you were "psychologically healthy"? That's just not a normal assessment. People who are healthy in that way, do not need to be assessed as healthy in that way.

Well, THIS writer's an idiot.

“His aides from the Senate, the presidential campaign, and the White House routinely described him with the same words: ‘psychologically healthy,’ ” writes Jonathan Alter

That tells you right there that they're lying -- and they know he is not. If they have to go out of their way to tell you that, and all in the same words . . . . !?!?!?!?

Me thinks they protest too much or are they repeating that line so often in hopes of making it appear as the truth? IOW, it's all a lie and he's as nutty as a fruit cake.

I see we picked up on the same thing.

I don't think I've ever heard anybody described in those terms. It's just a huge red flag.

Michael Douglas dumped MoDo for CZJ. MoDo hasn't been the same since.

And do words really matter when the picture of oil gushing out of the well continues to fill the screen?

It's a trite saying, but when your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Media pundits want good theater. She continues:

Nobody needs to see the president yelling or pounding the table. Ronald Reagan could convey command with a smile; Clint Eastwood, with a whisper. Americans need to know the president cares so they can be sure he’s taking fast, muscular and proficient action.

Reagan conveyed command with a smile because there was substance behind that smile. When the air traffic controllers went on strike, it wasn't Reagan's smile that conveyed command. He fired and replaced them. Reagan didn't have to shout because people knew through experience that Reagan would say what he meant, then take the necessary action.

Obama was a community organizer. He went into neighborhoods, told people the reason things were bad was because "the man" was holding them down, and skipped along on his merry way. He did nothing to fix problems, but was a pied piper sewing discontent. Whether it was Maureen Dowd, Peggy Noonan or Chris Matthews, when Obama was campaigning, there was precious little evaluation of his record, his actions, his accomplishments. They fell in love with him because if someone were making a movie about the first Black president, he would have gotten the role on the first reading.

Reality be damned. What's the story line? How does he look on camera? Barack Obama, mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm. So, Barack becomes president and the tingle runs down legs. Then the real job of governing begins and behind the scenes Obama passes out environmental awards to his top contributors and gives them a pass on inspections of their drilling platform. They take shortcuts that result in an accident that kills people and starts a multiple month spill that apparently no one knows how to fix.

Maureen thinks the problem is that Obama doesn't give the right Reagan smile or quiet Clint Eastwood whisper. No. The problem is that Obama doesn't know what he's doing. This was an unforced error caused by lax oversight and special treatment to campaign contributors. It was the result of failures of actual decisions and actions made before and during the spill.

Obama could have tap danced or given a quiet smile or hung from the chandelier and thrown Mardi Gras beads to a studio audience, but none of that changes the fact that a speech doesn't change the reality in the gulf.

John Kennedy committed the US to putting a man on the moon and returning him safely by the end of the 1960s. We did it. Great speech. Still quoted today. What would the speech have meant if there were no actions behind it? What if we had never gotten past the Mercury program? The speech would have been one of the great gaffes of modern history. Talk's talk and action is action, and most of the media can't tell the difference.

What in the world in Obama's past would lead anyone to think he would bring in a dose of normality?

His association with bill Ayers, his attendence at a virulent, race-baiting church, his support for partial birth abortion, his childhood spent in Indonesia under a Muslim father? What?
