(CNN) - Whispers about Nikki Haley's Sikh heritage burst into public view in the final days of South Carolina's Republican gubernatorial primary when state Sen. Jake Knotts called the Indian-American legislator a "raghead."
Knotts offered a pseudo-apology and was roundly condemned for the remark. Haley went on to win the primary in dominant fashion, capturing nearly 50 percent of the vote in a four-way race. She now faces Rep. Gresham Barrett in the June 22 runoff election.
But while Haley's commanding win last Tuesday proved her electoral viability - she won 42 of the state's 46 counties in the primary, including evangelical-heavy areas like Greenville and Spartanburg - it did not completely erase suspicions about her faith.

Yeah, so CNN has always been concerned with Christianity’s feelings. I am sure in the news rooms the editors sit around and say...” We are really concerned that Christians are uneasy, how can we find some stories to put them at ease?”
oh, but they don’t talk about Barack’s “is he or isn’t he Muslim?” questions? That’s rich!
I have my issues with Barrett, but he is an evangelical Christian and in a choice between two conservatives, I am going with the evangelical Christian.
With all due respect, who watches CNN?
I care more about her poitics than her faith.
This is the best they can do against her? The left must really be panicking.

Amen! The MSM doesn’t understand much about faith.
I really don’t think these kinds of attacks are going to work on her, she comes off as a really likable and honest person.
Not all Methodists believe that. My parish is headed by a Bible-believing pastor.
Pretty odd that the MSM would care about such a thing.
I have two words for you: JIMMY CARTER!
Ain't that the truth. And the cool thing is I'm beginning to learn the heavy accents when I need tech help or firewall help for my computer. As much as the caste system is just religious bondage to my thinking I do like the people. Hope she wins big!
There. Fixed it. And you are exactly right about the MSM ignoring people's concerns about Obama's Muslim background.
I have two words for you: JIMMY CARTER!
“Some,” in rhetorical writing, is considering the ultimate “hedge word.” When you see words like “some,” you could likely rest assured that the person writing the passage has no faith in what they’re writing as truth.
I really enjoy the Indian people, but in a recent thread here on FR, I learned that many of the Indians are Democrat-leaning. I spoke to a few Indians in my company, and I found that while they don’t wear their politics on their sleeves, they are very much invested in the old-world caste system and do lean Democrat in much the same way the Jews do.
Sad really. They’re very industrious, but I feel that when they come to America, they want the American freedoms without giving up the caste society mentality of their homeland.
Obama has two religions, or maybe, just maybe only one. I bet you can guess which one. He doesn’t believe in going to DC church.
