Tehran, 14 June (AKI) - Some 400 people were arrested during the anti-government rally in the Iranian capital Teran on Saturday to mark the first anniversary since the disputed re-election of hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iranian student news website 'Daneshjunews' reported.
Some 100 women and 300 men were among those arrested. All were transferred to Tehran's Evin Prison by bus where they are being held in solitary confinement, the website said.
A few thousand people from the opposition Green Movement gathered in Tehran to mark the anniversary of the presidential polls, which it claims were rigged to return Ahmadinejad to power.
The protesters marched around Tehran University, largely in silence and without wearing their familiar green scarves and wristbands.
After the contested vote on 12 June last year, hundreds of thousands of people rallied against Iran's hardline government.
This year, security forces almost outnumbered the relatively small protest after opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi cancelled plans to hold demonstrations against Ahmadinejad in Iran amid fears of a fresh crackdown.
Campaign group Human Rights Watch said last week that dissent had been forced underground by repression
Obama still refers to it as the ‘legitimate’ government of Iran.
