South Carolina Pol Questions Dem Senate Candidate's 'Mental Status'

By Heidi Noonan June 13, 2010

South Carolina Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Alvin M Greene, holds his own personal copy of his campaign flyer he used to show people he campaigned in Manning, S.C. [Pic in URL]. A South Carolina lawmaker on Sunday suggested that new Democratic Senate nominee Alvin Greene may be intellectually incapable of participating in the general election race.

State Rep. Todd Rutherford told Fox News that he went to Greene's house to discuss with him how Greene succeeded last week in becoming the candidate to challenge Republican Sen. Jim DeMint in the November election, but he found it difficult to decipher an answer.

"About two questions into a conversation with him, it would become apparent that he is not probably fit to answer the questions befitting a Senate candidate," Rutherford said. "If he was put into this, then it is a joke that is funny to all the rest of us, but he doesn't get it -- because I don't know that his mental status is such that he can get it."

On Friday South Carolina authorities launched a formal investigation into Greene's...

Of course, Mr. Greene is retarded. He is, after all, a Democrat!

Okay, again: Even if true, what does it say about (a) the Democrat voters of South Carolina or (b) the prospective senatorial field that he won the nomination anyway?

Last time I checked, the Constitution says nothing about mental capacity. Otherwise 99% of the present Congress would be out of office.

What Mr. Greene needs to do is file a camplaint with the Civil Rights Commission, charging racial discrimination and violation of his civil rights.

"When I asked him whether they had checked his mental health status, he seemed to suggest that doing so brought about racist implications and other things. He kind of ducked the issue,"

It sounds as if he is at least as smart as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpten.

I think Greene could learn from OTJ training and should be given a chance to do so.

“About two questions into a conversation with him, it would become apparent that he is not probably fit to answer the questions befitting a Senate candidate,” Rutherford said.

Befitting a Senate candidate? Just what befits a Senate candidate? Or, a Congressional candidate, for that matter? Surely not the mindless gibberish that spews from Barney Frank (who is responsible for the housing bubble?). Surely not Cynthia McKinney. Dennis Kucinich? Al Gore? The list is long...

He got the votes. Let him run. God knows he couldn’t do worse.

If intellect mattered, whither Patty Murray and others? Hell, the guy is a veteran isn’t he? That puts him several steps ahead of the vast majority of sitting senators.

What this farce might indicate is that primary elections are a relatively poor way to select candidates for public office. For all its drawbacks, a party convention at least knows how to pick a reasonable candidate. Then let the voters have their say in the general election.

Maybe the pResident could hold a bowling summit to determine the actual winner.

Shouldn't the party of identity politics embrace a mentally challenged candidate?

This is just too funny!

Well, Florida Democrats are still allowed to vote after 2000, proving that there are no standards of mental capacity in politics.

I agree that a party convention would not be likely to nominate a mentally retarded candidate. However, in states like DE where the state GOP is corrupt, primaries are needed.

Mr. Greene’s not retarded at all. He isn’t the most informed or knowledgable candidate ever to run for office, but that doesn’t indicate a lack of intelligence.

He did, after all, pass the intelligence test to get into the military.

The fact that he’s pretty quiet would indicate to me that he is more intelligent than most- he knows enough to keep quiet rather than speak up on things he’s not well informed on. He also knew enough not to answer questions about his pending morals charges, that shows intelligence, nothing good for him could have come from answering about that jackpot.
