GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Fifteen-year-old Dakota Byrd kicked sand over a puddle of black oil lining Gulf Shores beach.
As far as he could see Saturday afternoon, the white sand at the shoreline had turned black.
"I want to get rid of it," he said. Byrd looked into joining the cleanup effort, but he's too young.
Summer for him and his Gulf Shores buddies, he said, along with many others who enjoy the Alabama coastline, "is done."

Who needs Alberta’s “Oil Sands”?
We have our own.
The oil cleanup will create all of those green jobs that pay minimum wages.
Being a native of Alabama, I’ve spent much time enjoying Gulf Shores the sugar sand and saltwater. I believe you are spot on when you write of the amount of oil still to cover the coast that is to come.
I wonder if it were Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, would the response be any different.
Thanks O for nothing.
Yes...
Maybe the oil will eventually find its way there.
I’ve been saying for weeks that Obama could care less if states that didn’t vote for him and never will are covered in oil. Every particle of this thing is political. The Kenyan hates America anyway - why should he care how polluted it gets?
That about says it for me.
The Mississippi Coast is in trouble. I was stationed there 25 years ago and the Gulf currents push the debris off like a lagoon. Those folks have weathered alot but this may be to much.
I wonder if it were Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket, would the response be any different.>>>>>>>
It would be vociferous and loud. The attitude in Obama’s DC is “It’s just a bunch of rednecks there on the Gulf coast who don’t vote for us anyhow”
Ivan and Katrina damaged the beaches but where was the moaning and groaning then?
People just got off their asses and worked on getting it cleaned up.
On Fox News Sunday you actually had Brit Hume and Bill Crystal saying it was not obama's fault. The media got their marching orders. It's sickening.
Americans want to work. Americans want to jump in and solve problems.
But the government has a thousand reasons why we just can't do stuff like that anymore.
And after I heard that I promptly turned them off. Clueless.
