S.C. Strikes Again [Gail Collins finds us quaint]
New York Times ^ | June 11, 2010 | GAIL COLLINS

Alvin Greene filed for our sins.

Greene, an unemployed 32-year-old, is currently the most famous Democratic candidate in South Carolina. He just won the nomination to run against Senator Jim DeMint in November, overcoming major obstacles such as not having campaign staff, campaign funds, a campaign Web site, cellphone or personal computer. And then there’s the felony charge pending for allegedly showing a University of South Carolina student a pornographic picture.

I’m sorry we have to keep coming back to South Carolina. There are 50 states, and I’m sure every single one has some really peculiar political phenomena that we could make fun of if time allowed.

But South Carolina has definitely been on a roll. Earlier this week, it looked as if the big primary story was the two Republican political consultants who claimed to have had sexual encounters with Nikki Haley, a candidate for governor. Haley went on to finish 27 percentage points ahead of her closest rival. Having endured so many sex scandals with male candidates, we have long wondered what would happen when women running for high office started to get hit with adultery charges. Apparently, it makes them more popular.

Now there’s Alvin Greene. To get on the ballot in South Carolina, a candidate for Senate has to pay a $10,440 filing fee. By now, there are political junkies in every part of the United States who could make a list of things that Greene needed to spend money on more than he needed to be on an election ballot. The cellphone and computer would be nice. His own apartment. (He lives with his dad.) And a lawyer, since he’s currently being represented by a public defender in the obscenity case.

“That I’m not commenting on,” he said on MSNBC.

Well, how about that? This guy didn’t campaign, spent 10,000 to sign up(that’s a lot of money)and here he is the winner.

Makes you wonder why the already there Congress critters are spending so much time and money to run.

>>Is it me, or is she just a tad patronizing?<<

Of course, SC is to be made fun of! The Know-it-alls at the Slimes foreget about their whoring ex-Governor and the cheater present Governor and the crooked Legislature. But SC is soooo backward.

Last time I checked, CA has the worst education system while in NY they give credit for no answer and the wring answer. Who should be made fun of, you worthless b*tch? With a face like that, I’d hide it.

But, but Alvin Greene is a minority and a loyal democrat. Isn't this the kind of candidate the elitist liberals always lecture us to represent the underclass and the underpriveleged? Ahh..but in liberal leftist world it's always their mustard that needs passing.......

Better yet on Fox this morning this racist Democratic consultant on with Pat Buchanan said the reason he won is that blacks know that Greene spelled with an”e” is black. Buchanan looked at him and said, “What?”

Me too. Apparently Gael Greene the food critic, Ashley Greene the Twilight actress, Bob Greene the newspaper columnist, and Graham Greene the British novelist could all expect a majority of the South Carolina black vote.

What is occurring is the fact that the Democrats are being exposed for being the hypocrites that they really are. Reading some of the liberal descriptions of the Senate candidate from SC are racist and demeaning. You would think he was a Republican (and he’s not). The problem is that they know nothing about him. He is an unknown commodity. He may not be able to be “controlled” or relied upon. Bottom line, he’s not one of them. He’s a commoner. The snobs don’t want him. Only the educated, or well to do people need apply. The hypocrisy stinks.

Jim DeMint must be shaking in his boots over the prospect of facing Alvin Greene in November.

Here's Keith Olbermann interviewing Mr. Greene (the interview starts at about 2:11):

Down south they used to require literacy tests for voting. Nowadays, it looks the election is the literacy test.

My worry is the Franken effect. What if ACORN, SEIU, and a sleazy Secretary of State together elect this guy despite his absence of qualifications. The Senate doesn’t have room for another clown this exotic, do they?

More importantly, ‘why would the Dem.Party accept the money without vetting his credentials to represent it?’

The Democrats cashed the check - no questions asked!

They can’t steal it if it isn’t close, and Jim DeMint is very popular.

Yes, I can attest that the two people I know with last name Greene (in SC no less), are white.

Did you forget election 2008 and all that untraceable money they not only accepted but used to elect the present president of these United States, all 57 of them?
