My great, great Aunt Allie in the early 1860’s at the age of 16 accepted a teaching position on the western frontier packed her bags and left providence R.I. on her own traveled West.
She taught half wild gun slinging cowboys some older than her
she later returned and became the Superintendent of Schools for Providence.
I am sure she faced all the dangers associated with the frontier but back then at 16 you were an adult and like the book/movie the True Grit girl/woman character was probably the norm of the times and most likely the norm until the baby boomer generation. It’s all in expectations, these days we just expect less of our children
I’m with you 100%. Abey is awesome. To have gone as far as she did, and continuing even after her chance at a record shows what a grown up she is. She will never be deterred by anything in life. What an incredible experience! Her brother made it. Her parents raised two very mature and capable kids, most of us parents should hope to do as well.
Your analogy is flawed. Doing things with kids is WAY different than launching them into the wide open ocean in a small boat. Dude, we live in a world where the largest airline cannot even deliver two kids to the correct destination. My annoyance is with the parents not the kid. When she is 18 and wants to do it so be it. Most 16 year olds are barely capable of driving let alone sailing in the open ocean - in WINTER.
“What she accomplished is quite impressive”
Quite...it’s not like just anyone can go out and get stranded in the middle of the Indian Ocean in the winter...
God does not guarantee anybodies safety here on earth. Why should you? (this question directed at the weak kneed nanny state safety Nazis).
The barbarian hoards looked at the Roman empire and found it's citizens weak and feckless. The barbarian hoards look at us the same way now. It may still take a thousand years for the house of cards to come tumbling down, but tumble down it will. I wonder what the next dark age will look like?
Aproval? They don’t need your approval.
I love these people who care more for my children than I do.
I particularly like the poster who also cared more about out how much it cost Australia to find her than the Aussies (I bet the poster is not Australian) do. The Aussies are no doubt applauding her adventurous spirit.
Hundreds of children are killed or injured in automobiles every year. Does that mean they should not be allowed in automobiles? Or better yet, why don’t we just ban cars and trucks outright? That way no one would ever get hurt by them again.
Sheesh.
Is that what she did? I thought she had sailed solo halfway around the world before that happened. Am I wrong on that?
Thanks...I’ll say I have to agree with you. The attitudes are beyond being conservative. They’re downright mean.
Liberals are the ones who are mean.
Conservatives at least find out the truth before they speak. And I haven’t seen a lot of that on these threads.
It’s more like a pile of liberal dems have taken over.
Annnnnd Some of us know who they are by what they post.
Watch it, buddy. Bungee jumpers are true heroes, boldly going where no jackass has gone before.
You miss the big rescue effort perhaps?
fact or fiction....abby needed to be rescued.
Bravo!! Excellent post.
I agree. If not post of the year. Perfect.
Wow! Do you hit the nail on the head here or what!
I cannot believe that a supposed FReeper associated me with active pro-abortionist, baby killers, because I have said something similar to what you say here, albeit with less eloquence. That all of a sudden half of Free Republic seems to have gone over to the Dark Side of the State as the uber-judge of what is good for "children" just amazes me.

Your acting as though nobody could possibly have trouble sailing the Indian Ocean, just poor little Abby.
Thats tough sailing and bad things can and will happen. It is non of your business what choices Abby or her family make. You have a collectivist mentality. Petty and meddlesome. Just more evidence why laws in America are becoming more and more intrusive. More and more oriented towards applying the full cohersive force of Law and Law Enforcement to curb unusual or uncomfortable behavior. Leave other people alone and take care of yourself and your family the best you can.
>> people of achievement such as Abby and her parents — people who don’t need to wait for state approval for every action, and state funding for every mouthful.
What a pantload!
Sorry but Abby and her parents are EPIC FAIL! DEMONSTRATED epic fail! They are NOT “people of achievment”.
No, they didn’t ask for state approval for every action — but when they sent their widdle pwecious off on her boat, they damn sure DID implicitly expect to have the support of EVERYONE IN THE WORLD to go looking for her when she got in over her head — to the tune of a million bucks that none of us can afford.
Sorry but THAT is a LIBERAL attitude, not the attitude of a “person of achievement”.
I have no problem with risk takers. None whatsoever!
But I have a HUGE problem with phony “risk takers” who act tough and adventurous, and when things go well and they win they revel in the gold and glory, but they expect to be bailed out at OUR expense when their risk goes awry!
That includes financial risk takers, and it goes for selfish little Abby and her dumbf__k parents too.
No. I merely pointed out that you misrepresented what she had done. You said she had simply gotten stranded in the ocean. I pointed out that she had sailed halfway around the world solo before that happened, which is quite an accomplishment. You then changed the subject. I think that brings us up to the present.
Look into getting a hobby or perhaps a new prescription.
so you would be fine with this if the rescue were privately funded?
