She choose adventure, risk, excellence.
We used to value such in both adults and the young...
Pity that seems to have died even among Conservatives.

So the future of America belongs to debtridden, publicity-seeking Octoms and Octodads like the Sunderlands who push their children to pursue foolish risks for advertising dollars?

the video game playing, MTV watching, prescription drug abusing teens that are all too common today. Those are her only other choices in life as opposed to a selfish quest for personal ego satisfaction?

Her mom is pregnant with her 8th kid so they can try this stunt again in a few years with a different kid. Another balloon baby, maybe they should just give this one to a good family.

Thanks.
My grandpa came from Russia as a baby. My great grand-parents made that trip around 1900. Look at the average 20 yr old today, would they, could they, do anything like that?
I echo the lament, the virtues that made America great are becoming so diluted it seems there’s no hope of America being what it once was.

Oh no no, risk is too dangerous. Anyone taking a risk is just greedy....

Yes, OUR society needs to return to Godly values which produce people like this. You nailed it. God supports personal ego trips? I thought one isn't supposed to tempt God?

This isn’t about mediocrity vs. excellence. It’s about deb-ridden and publicity-seeking Octoms and Octodads seeking to cash in on their kids. There is a big difference and you know it.

Looking on the bright side, neither Indian nor US taxpayers had to finance an expensive rescue operation for this child, whose parents should lose custody of her immediately for letting her put her life in danger.Life in danger indeed. Everyone knows the earth is flat. It's a good thing her boat broke down before she sailed off the edge of the earth.

From your link I lifted this gem:
But this has not been easy on Zac's parents. Laurence Sunderland, a shipwright whose business has suffered because of the recession, reluctantly conceded in an interview that the odyssey has cost about $140,000, and that the family is sinking hopelessly into debt and now must pay for Zac's passage through the Panama Canal. So pops spend $140,000 to finance his kid. That does not sound like a "poor family" to me. It sounds like a family with misplaced priorities.
They may be broke, but that is because they are also stupid.

Fancy technology saved her and not capability. Nicely put!!!

She choose adventure, risk, excellence. She chose a reckless adventure for personal gain. And nearly got the fishing boat Captain killed trying to save her from her own foolishness.

Abby’s mother and father won’t even be able to personally greet their daughter when she finally arrives on shore for the first time after all of this. They are horribly selfish people.
