leaving politics aside, the reason that soccer has not arrived (and may never rise) to the first tier of professional sports in America is tradition and timing. There is no American soccer tradition as there is in baseball and football. Even basketball enjoys a tradition far beyond any national memories we have of American soccer....

I like lutefisk. What do I know that the rest of you schlubs don’t?
The SCM is doing it’s best to shove that soccer crap down our throats. ESPN is all over this junk.
I’m not buying. Don’t care for the game, and haven’t met anyone that likes that game that I like!
That's what they know.
Hence it's increasing popularity in the US.
Nothing. The rest of the world doesn’t have any other options...
“I like lutefisk. What do I know that the rest of you schlubs dont?”

I enjoyed playing soccer as a child, but to sit down and watch a game these days would be equivalent to a root canal.
The rest of the world doesn't have American football, basketball, and baseball, so they focus much of their love of organized sport into soccer.
Actually, it's growing rapidly in the U.S. as well, particularly in schools and colleges.
Americans has Major League baseball and one boring sport is enough.
