A Phantom Candidate for U.S. Senate?

The democrat candidate expected to win the primary and challenge Jim DeMint was beaten by an unemployed, recently discharged Army veteran who used his personal savings to pay the filing fee.

Alvin Green was on a local radio station half an hour ago, and the poor man has no idea what he's doing. He couldn't give an easy interview and sounded a bit confused.

From an earlier article on the "phantom candidate:"

At the end of a dirt driveway off a dusty highway in rural Clarendon County, just outside the town of Manning, a lawn overgrown with weeds sports no campaign sign for the man living in a house there who has filed to run as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate.

The candidate, a 32-year-old unemployed black Army veteran named Alvin Greene, walked into the state Democratic Party headquarters in March with a personal check for $10,400. He said he wanted to become South Carolina’s U.S. senator.

Needless to say, Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler was a bit surprised.

Fowler had never met Greene before, she says, and the party isn’t in the habit of taking personal checks from candidates filing for office. She told Greene that he’d have to start a campaign account if he wanted to run. She asked him if he thought it was the best way to invest more than $10,000 if he was unemployed.

Several hours later, Greene came back with a campaign check. The party accepted it, and Greene became an official candidate for the U.S. Senate. He was eager to have his picture put on the party’s website to show he had filed, says state Democratic Party executive director Jay Parmley.

Greene will face Charleston County Councilman Vic Rawl in the June 8 primary. If he wins, he will run against U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint in the fall.

But after filing to run, Alvin Greene’s campaign went dark.

Though he says he is running, and running to win, Greene has not taken the steps one might expect from an active candidate — some of them required by law.

Strange, strange story. Too bad he's a dem. I might have considered voting for him though I like DeMint.

Pretty much. Still, it’s weird. Something isn’t right with this whole story. And he beat the Dem’s man by a large margin, two to one at this point.

Sounds like another case of the Obama Syndrome. Feel the tingle! “Vet” or not, he’ll vote exactly the way Nancy Pelosi tells him to vote or else.

I would like to know who gave him the money.

However, if the facts are as stated...I commend him for using his personal savings to try to make a difference.

Oh no question. I kind of like the idea of a vet beating the establishment guy but not enough to vote for a democrat.

And since I cannot stand Fowler, I always smile when she’s crossed. And make no mistake, she’s been crossed BIG with this outcome.

The locals are wondering if Obama will come to SC to campaign for Green. Man, I only WISH.

$10,400 on unemployment?

Obama must have a union guarantee in SC and they don't need to spend any money, just vote ten times each!

Who gave him the filing money???

Dang! It just dawned on me! We’re talking the Senate here! Yikes! Well, Pelosi, Reid, Reid Pelosi. They’re all the same to me. A commie is a commie.

The word around here is that the guy had the money saved up from a signing bonus, but who knows how accurate that is.

This is just strange, out-there kind of strange. And like I said, the guy couldn’t do a straightforward, congratulations-type interview. He was fumbling and bumbling so much I felt bad for him.

Something is really odd here.

I doubt Jim is breathing very hard. This guy is a gift.

Jim
DeMint
Ping!

Want on or off this ping list? Just FReepmail me.

Follow Sen. DeMint on Twitter.

Jim is running for reelection this November. If you like his philosophy, consider tossing him some bucks.

Can Repubs vote in this primary? I think it may be a message by moderate Dems in SC because they are mad at Obama plus this unemployed vet may have gotten black Dem votes because he is black.

I think I would take this vet over Miss Sissy-a*s Lindsay Graham-nesty.

I know, and I can’t see voting for anyone else, but I also like an underdog veteran story. He’s running as a dem, though, so that’s out of the question.

I wouldn’t trade DeMint for anyone! Unless he gets a bad case of Lindsayitis, in which case all bets are off.

Yes, but the Gov race has kept us repubs busy and I don’t know anyone who would forego voting on the gov race for an unknown dem. I don’t think that happened.

Once a Democrat will alway cow tow to Democrat establishment; we thank you for his service; but we are not able to trust another Democrat since they are on their way to destroying our country; unless we put power back into the hand of common sense Republican Leadership.
