Raid fall-out continues, after 'Klaxons,' 'Gorillaz' also pull out.
US alternative rock bank the 'Pixies' canceled their June 9 Tel Aviv show on Sunday, producer Shuki Weiss announced.
The decision followed earlier cancellations by the 'Klaxons' and 'Gorillaz' following the death of nine Turks, when the Navy boarded ships belong to the Gaza-bound flotilla on Monday.
Before the raid on the ship, British rock icon Elvis Costello' canceled a show, generating a lot of publicity and anger in Israel, however the latest pull-outs were received with more resignation. The producer issued the following statement purporting to come from the band:
"The decision was not reached easily, and we all know well the Israeli fans have been waiting for this visit for far too long.
We'd like to extend our deepest apologies to the fans, but events beyond all our control have conspired against us.
We can only hope for better days, in which we will finally present the long awaited visit of the Pixies in Israel."
There was no reference to the cancellation on the band's website and details of the concert remain on the site.
The producer's announcement said that refunds would be available from points of sale as of Monday morning.
“Oh my goodness, my heart would be entirely broken if Gorillaz didnt show up...”
Godzilla?
Maybe Rodan or Mothra can show up....
How about Megalon, Orga, Gigan, Hedorah?
What does “circumstances beyound our control” mean.
Is that PC for I’m not coming because of the ship issue or is someone else pulling their strings.
The Israli government should send their regrets that the band cannot appear, but that they understand that the attempts to run their blockade may result in Hamas resuming their smuggling of arms into Gaza and resuming rocket attacks on the Israeli civilian population, and that the venue would present an attractive target for suicide bombers.
I am a huge Pixies fan, politics aside, and have seen them numerous times including last November and the venue was sold out. Smaller venue, ~4k capacity.
Of course, they are a local band so they probably draw better in Boston.
Maybe these arteests can book some performances in Turkey, Syria or even Iran.
This is like Josie and the Pussycats canceling concerts in Israel.
These groups that cancelled all sound like the kind I’d pay cash to avoid hearing.
And on the Gorillaz cancellation...just the musicians, or are the cartoon characters bailing out as well?
No Pixies in Israel? This is the absolute last straw...my life has become meaningless. I just can’t go on anymore.
I must be behind the times - I don’t know who the heck any of these bands are. Wouldn’t care one way or the other if they showed up.
You aren’t into ALT-ROCK or HIP HOP are you ?
No, I'm too old for that. It's all noise to me. :)
I honestly didn’t know The Pixies were still around.
eff the Pixies
more Gen X crap music....Radiohead...too
just meterosexual garbage
Without knowing why they are withdrawing in this case, I would say that it seems unlikely that if they are truly anti-semetic that they would have scheduled the concert in the first place.
I am also a huge Pixies fan.
For those of you who don’t know who the Pixies are, they are one of the more under-rated but highly influencial alt bands. They are the pioneers of the LOUD-quiet-LOUD sound that made bands like Nirvana huge.
I can understand why perhaps some of the older members wouldn’t recognize them, but they really are a great band. Frank Black (aka Black Francis) went on to have a great solo career, and Kim Deal (the bass player) founded the Amps and the Breeders.
I would strongly agree that they would not be anti-semetic if they offered to play the gig in the first place. Great band, and great “people” from what I’ve read about them.
“Oh my goodness, my heart would be entirely broken if Gorillaz didnt show up...
“
Aye I like him a lot, its sad that they need to play politcs too :(
What’s wrong with entertainers...shut up and entertain, leave politics to someone else.
Klaxons, Gorillaz, Pixies, Elvis Costello... oh no, can the culture take the hit?
Now I may not be the biggest mod-rock fan, but calling the Pixies “one hit wonders” is like calling Elvis a “flash in the pan.”
Not only did they have a fruitful career, but Kim Deihl and Frank Black both had some killer solo work.
