MLB deciding whether to review call

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball was still deciding Thursday morning whether to review the umpire's blown call that cost Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game.

Commissioner Bud Selig has the power to reverse umpire Jim Joyce's missed call that came with two outs in the ninth inning Wednesday night in Detroit. Joyce ruled Cleveland's Jason Donald safe, then admitted he got it wrong.

Selig would likely consult with his top advisers before making such a ruling. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says the call should be overturned.

Joyce was scheduled to be back at work Thursday afternoon, umpiring at home plate in the game between the Tigers and Indians.

I am torn about this one.....but since the next batter was also out, it had no bearing on the outcome of the game... he was CLEARLY out, and Gallaraga should be awarded the perfect game. Blown call, without question

This thing overshadowed the spectacular catch that Jackson made to get the first out of the inning.

Yeah, it might suck to lose. I’m still pissed off about that 1979 Houston-Pittsburgh blown call that cost us a Super Bowl spot. We coulda spanked the Rams that year.

He caught it up in the web, then tagged the bag, then shook it down to the pocket...I thought he bobbled it at first as well, but I think it was moved post-out...magritte

This wasn't the first batter, this was the last batter, or should have been. And nothing of import or note occured after the blown call. Simply another out.

The commissioner of baseball is a god-like position. He can simply announce that this is a one-time only ruling that should not be used cited as a precedent for any other ruling.

The particular circumstances of this particular blown call make it a no-brainer to correct.

Selig will reverse the call. I bet on it.

I can't say I agree with it, but that is what will happen.

I’m a purist - hate the DH, specialization, music and lights at ballparks and the whole works.

Still, there is absolutely no harm in reversing the call and granting the perfect game. It was the last out and should have been the last call - nothing is harmed and there is no replay or what ifs at all.

Apologize, reverse it and let Gallaraga fade back into obscurity.

One guy gets a hit negated, the next batter gets an out negated and the pitcher gets a perfect game, which he actually earned.

It would be more interesting to award him a perfect game while leaving the hit on the record.

It would create a great new trivia question. "Who is the only play ever to get a hit in a game where the opposing pitcher threw a perfect game?"

Even tennis uses technology for goodness sake. This is not the 19th century. Baseball should get up to speed. Some percentage of the patrons at the perfect-imperfect Tiger’s game yesterday probably got a ticket from a red light camera on their way home to watch some other TIVO-ed event. Probably several thousands of the people at that game could have replayed the call using the video feature on their own cell phones and had it be more accurate.

This incident is reminding me of a game I heard about that involved Babe Ruth when he was still a pitcher for the Red Sox. He’d been out partying the night before and had a fearful hangover. When the umpire called a walk on the first batter, Ruth took the opportunity to argue the call and got himself thrown out of the game. The relief pitcher (I think it was Addie Joss) throws out the runner trying to steal second and then put down the next 26 batters. For years, this game was counted as a perfect game. About 10 years ago, MLB got around to cleaning up the record book and decided that this was not a perfect game.

As far as this current game goes, I wouldn’t be too upset if the umpire was overruled.

I’m just saying, just because it’s the last batter really doesn’t make any difference...a blown call is just as blown in the 1st inning as the last...when you start “Fixing” games, there’s really no rationale to stop at “the last batter”...magritte
