Imho, that is the only reason he would resign. It's not all that unlikely, either.
Many people seem to be forgetting how out of nowhere he came to ascend to the most powerful position in the world.
Not to “eminitize the eschaton” too much, but...
Satan doesn’t “know the day or the hour” any more than you or I do, and therefore must keep his “beast” on deck throughout history.
However, he, Satan, can read the signs and scriptural prophecy as well as anyone, and can see that things are unfolding like the “beginning of birth pains”.
The beast would have to be a brooding, thinking (too much) young man with a chip on his shoulder about Christians, Jews, and humanity in general. He would have to be charismatic, and have the beginnings of a messiah complex, for the Antichrist is not only opposed to Christ, he is “instead of” Christ.
So, this “puppet master” could be a bigger entity than most folks are willing to admit.
I don’t think he will resign if his stringpullers decide it is time for him to go. His narcissism ensures that he will take advice so long as he sees it as promoting him but by now understands in his own mind that he is far superior to those advisors and mentors. He will not respond positively to any push and will try to eliminate his heretofore handlers from influence at the least. He likely does not understand that other people got him where he is and will strike back when they “turn on him.”
That's the point; Obama did not make such a dramatic ascent ion all by himself. He had some very powerful allies managing his rocket ride. These same people can/will throw him under the bus if he is deemed to be a liability. I think there are two power groups within the democrat party; one has Obama as their shill, the other is using Hillary. I think the pro Hillary cartel is already very busily aligning their assets for her to make a run for 2012. We'll see..
