Israel recoils as US backs nuclear move

Washington's unprecedented backing for a UN resolution for a nuclear-free Middle East that singles out Israel has both angered and deeply worried the Jewish state although officials are cagey about openly criticising their biggest ally.

The resolution adopted by the United Nations on Friday calls on Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and urges it to open its facilities to inspection.

It also calls for a regional conference in 2012 to advance the goal of a nuclear-free Middle East.

Israel is widely believed to be the only nuclear power in the Middle East, with around 200 warheads, but has maintained a policy of deliberate ambiguity about its capabilities since the mid-1960s.

The document, which singles out Israel but makes no mention of Iran's controversial nuclear programme, drew a furious reaction from the Jewish state who decried it as "deeply flawed and hypocritical."

But it was US backing for the resolution which has caused the most consternation among Israeli officials and commentators, who interpreted the move as "a resounding slap around the face" which has dealt a very public blow to Israel's long-accepted policy of nuclear ambiguity.

Publicly, the Israel government has not criticised the US position but privately, officials expressed deep disappointment over the resolution, which Washington backed despite intensive Israeli efforts to block it.

For the record I think Obama is playing with fire. Of all the issues in the world he could push, he chooses to bully and undercut Israel. I don’t see this ending well for The Won. Just my thoughts.

Nuclear-Free Middle East = Jew-Free Middle East. It’s inconceivable the Obama team doesn’t know this.

Obama and the UN are just giving cover to Iran who must already have their nuke.

Hey you lefty Jews, how’s that hope and change working out for you now? What you need is a whole nation of Netanyahus.

Let's see. The UN is driven by communist ideology. The countries surrounding Israel are committed to its annihilation, but they have not taken action because Israel is armed. So they pass a resolution asking Israel to disarm. There is something wrong with this picture!

What will happen is predictable. Remember the land for peace that Israel was forced to implement? It did not work. The enemies of Israel are using their new land to destroy the country that willingly gave it to them as predicted by millions of people with common sense.

I think he’s unquestionably an anti-Semite. How else to explain Jeremiah Wright?

Jimbo, I sure hope not. I think Ahmadinejad is, if possible, even crazier than Kim of N. Korea. Not a person to trust with a Nuke At All.

Obama knows this quite well. It is a goal of his administration, along with alienating Israel to the point that we are no longer close allies. It is beyond obvious that this administration does not like Israel. They simply just haven't come out of the closet and stated the obvious.

His next limp wrist justification for this stance will be that if Israel does not have nukes, the rest of the region will not need nor pursue them. Of course, lefties and cowards will believe in such drivel, along with too many moderates who actually believe they are intelligent, so he will likely get away with such nonsense.

I sincerely hope that Israel is smart enough to just say no.

Of course they know it. Team Hussein are anti-Semitic Islamists.

Iran has their nuke. Obama, Rahm, Hillary and Huma have told Bibi to give up Israel’s nukes or they’ll let Ahmadinejad off his leash. Everything is going according to Obama’s muslim handlers’ plan.

It would be nice if Israel chose this time to delay Iran's nuclear program. If they can't use planes, then, maybe, they can use the nukes that anti-Semite Carter talked about.

That would be the most elegant response to the messiah's bullying.

I just don’t know what to say. I’ve been living in a fantasy world, I guess, where Ahmadinejad was working feverishly to develop nuclear weapons but hadn’t yet quite made the grade. If he really and truly already has them, then that is very bad. Obama has so much to answer for—and this will NOT be the least.

Question: If all the Jews just disappeared and the state of Israel was empty, leaving it open for Palestinians, etc., would there be peace in the ME and would they give up their nuclear weapons projects?

No. If Israel was gone, there would be no need for the Middle East to keep the Palestinians around. Nobody wants or needs them. The point is though, Israel is there and will remain. Our dear leader may not like them but the American people support them. That’s what counts.

There is a school of thought that Israel will act fairly soon as they see the approaching financial insolvency of the USA. At that point, they are completely alone. Frankly, with Obama in the White House, that line has already been crossed.
