1 year after officer tackled him, man is bedridden, wife is caretaker
Seattle Times ^ | 16 May 10 | Sara Jean Green

OLYMPIA — Sarah Harris goes through the motions of her day trying hard not to think about what life was like a year ago — or what it would be like now if not for "the incident."

She feels guilty leaving the house, even if only for a couple of hours to visit her mom or sister, to run errands, or go grocery shopping. She still cries every night.

Her husband, the first boy she kissed and the only man she's ever loved, suffered a catastrophic brain injury when his head slammed into a concrete wall after a brief footchase with two King County sheriff's deputies on Mother's Day 2009. He's now confined to bed, unable to talk, walk or do anything for himself.

Christopher Sean Harris spent six weeks at Harborview Medical Center, where his family was encouraged to remove him from life support because doctors didn't think he'd ever come out of a coma. But he did, and was transferred to an Edmonds nursing home in June.

Sarah Harris, who worked as a manager for Nordstrom and dreamed of becoming a buyer for the department store, gave up her job to care for her husband.

"I loved my job, and I miss it all the time," she said. "But I knew there was no way I could go back to work and leave him alone in a nursing home all day. There was no decision to even make."

A horrible tragic accident all the way around.

No. Not "all the way around." This incident is far more horrible for the victim, who will likely never walk or talk again and will certainly not ever enjoy the full and active life he previously had again. If he is lucky in court, he *might* be able to get a civil settlement from the government paid by the taxpayers to cover his medical expenses and make sure his wife has an income to permit her to care for him for the rest of their lives together.

The cop, on the other hand, has paid absolutely NOTHING for his actions in this case. He was cleared by an inherently biased "internal investigation" by his fellow cops, and even if the lawsuit is successful, will never have to pay so much as a dime seeing as it will be covered by the taxpayers.

While both the majority and dissent agreed there is no per se rule, the opinions came close to holding that there was one for high crime areas: “It looks like a duck, walks like a duck, it must be a duck.”

You always run from the cops?

Though certainly not advisable in all cases, there are indeed some instances when running from the cops, even in the United States of America, is indeed justified.

You would be surprised of the number of “New” posters who join only to disrupt. We see it all the time around here.

The moniker, invented facts and the inane verse quotes kind of give it all away, don’t they?

I await you getting yourself caught up in something. Let us now how it goes.

I am 63 years old and have traveled the world and have been caught up in many situations. Do you really want to hear about them all?

Are you advising Blacks to always run from White policemen?

That is because the cops did not see him toss an object. The drugs were never recovered. We see it in the video though. Any FAIR minded person would know it was drugs.

Truly, you are pitiful.

You put your ignorance on a long stick, raise it on high, and wave it back and forth like a banner.

“Crime lab? We don’ need no steenkin’ crime lab!”

You are an utter poseur.

That said, the actions of the cop in this case were not too outrageous. It is just unfortunate they led to great injury...

Would you like to reread what you wrote and try again?

Hey Cop Bashers, how about giving Cops the benefit of the doubt for a change instead of pre judging them? I know I’m wasting my time. Just wanted to have my say...

...and your say is ignorant. I've followed this -local- story since day one, and the cops were clearly in the wrong.

Do you want to match your knowledge of events with mine?

Psalm, you and those like you that masquerade as Patriotic conservatives are pitiful. Like true liberals, you bash cops in a knee jerk reaction and give perps the benefit of the doubt. You put your blind anti-cop bias on a long stick. Go away and post on Huffington or DailyKos...you will find plenty of cop bashers there.

Cops do not leave drugs lying on the sidewalk, no matter how ‘distraught’ they are.
******************************

Nope.

Faithful cops put suspected drugs in evidence, and that substance is subsequently analyzed in a lab by specialists for use at trial or other proceedings if the substance proves to be drugs.

Corrupt cops put discarded drugs in their pockets, to consume, sell, or plant later.

Oh, wait . . .

Your response reveals your anti-cop bias. Listen, it’s not their fault that when you were a pimply faced 17 yr old you got pulled over with your date Jenny Sue and the Officer made you look like the ass-munch you probably were in front of Jenny, then the same cop probably banged her a week later...get over it.

My point is that all too often I find these knee-jerk cop bashing threads on FR and its sickening....

I find knee jerk defense of police brutality disgusting.

And as far as police tactics...we're learning every day...that's the problem. They don't stand up to impartial scrutiny.

Again gogeo, you must be an expert since you say it that must settle it.

How about not. We have all seen or experienced these Rambo wanna-bes hopped up on steroids, testosterone, Redbull and KrispeKremes running aorund in paramilitary attire with assault weapons but know they are all too chickensh!t to have actually kicked in doors in Fallujah. When these guys admit that their first priority is to serve and protect in stead of the union line about "officer safety" being paramount and begin to look and act like the term innocent until proven guilty is meaningful I will continue to look at them like strange pit bulls off the leash...

Everyone needs to be accountable to someone...except police, I guess.

Personal responsibility and citizen duty are no longer part of the progressive culture. I have to wonder exactly what crime he was committing that made him decide to avoid the police...

I am amazed. You are aware that area of town is known for muggings?

He was found to have committed no crime.

Psalm, you and those like you that masquerade as Patriotic conservatives are pitiful.

Patriotism involves the unqualified support of government thugs that seriously injure innocent people? You learn something new everyday.
