I never noticed this particular column before but it popped up in my newscatcher RSS feeds this morning.
The Obama Messiah Watch by Tim Noah at Slate is apparently keeping tabs on the media and it's portrayal of Obama as the second coming.
This time he calls out Jonathan Alter's new book "The Promise" which details President Obama's first year. There's more information at the link but here is a passage from that book:
"Rabbi David Saperstein, reading from Psalms in English and Hebrew, noticed from the altar that the good men and women of the congregation that day, including the Bidens and other dignitaries, had not yet stood. Finally Bishop Vashti McKenzie of the African Methodist Church asked that everyone rise. At that moment Saperstein saw something from his angle of vision: "If I had seen it in a movie I would have groaned and said, 'Give me a break. That's so trite.'" A beam of morning light shown [sic] through the stained-glass windows and illuminated the president-elect's face. Several of the clergy and choir on the altar who also saw it marveled afterward about the presence of the Divine."

This will creep you out then. Slate quotes Alter's book:

Read it and thought...hmmm...that name sounds familar...Saperstein...I know that guy...aha!...the satanic doctor in Rosemary's Baby (played by Ralph Bellamy).
I’ve been saying for decades too many idiots have the right to vote. They should at least know how many SC justices there are.
Or, more likely, the good Bishop and the leaders of the congregation are perfectly aware of the lighting effect caused by the sun shining through their stained glass windows at certain times of the day, and simply staged the seating arrangements and timing in order to take advantage of the resulting "aura" for dramatic effect.
That, and seeing exactly what they wanted to see, then interpreting it in terms that fit their individual "schemata".
It's one of the oldest tricks in the book - great for manipulating the emotional responses of groups of people. Most of history's greatest charlatans have well understood and capitalized on the dramatic effects of lighting in their presentations (or at least their handlers have). It's routine in film, stage, and TV production, but for some reason, when it's done live people still gasp and swoon. I'm sure there are plenty of people in that congregation who are dumb enough to fall for it.
