HOUSTON BP had to halt its ambitious effort to plug its stricken oil well in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday afternoon when engineers saw that too much of the drilling fluid they were injecting into the well was escaping along with the leaking crude oil.

I have sold drilling equipment for 40 years and worked on rigs in college when my Global Marine VP father thought it would be a good way to keep me out of trouble. I have always been interested in offshore and have been on rigs from the Gulf to South Africa, from California to Italy. HOWEVER I am no expect in killing wells.
I have no idea. A lot will depend on the loop current in the Gulf and if they stop it before there are any tropical storms or hurricanes. Also how much oil is sitting under the surface. Some are saying as much as 90% could be unseen and lingering beneath the surface.
I have some friends that are heading out of Naples tomorrow. They will try to get as close as possible and do some testing, samples and take some photos and videos of some of the deep water reefs. I’ll email you when they in and let you know what they found. They plan to stay out there over the weekend and come in late Sunday or Monday.
Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?
Did anyone else catch the whole statement from the news conference??...here it is. Look carefully at the last sentence.
OBAMA: When I woke up this morning, and Im shaving and Malia knocks on my bathroom door and she peeks in her head, and she says, Did you plug the hole yet, daddy? Because I think everybody understands that, you know, when when we are fouling the earth like this, it has concrete implications not just for this generation but for future generations. I grew up in Hawaii where the ocean is sacred.
He says he grew up in Hawaii. Normally someone would say they were born and raised unless they were born somewhere else, then they say they grew up. Is this a slip of the tongue that he was only raised by Grampa Dunham but born elsewhere???????
Did you notice he said “shut this down” but he said nothing about:
1) The massive cleanup that awaits
2) The inevitable destruction to many parts of the Gulf States’ economies, particularly how to handle the countless numbers of small businesses that this leak will put out of business.
I can't imagine the technology to operate drilling and extraction at 200 feet, much less 5,600 feet.
It is amazing. I know it has to be stopped, but the jerk laying claim to the operation keeps me from being too disappointed that the last effort didn't work, as long as the next one does.
If we can't stop it, how long can this leak go on at this pace? Can it crap up the whole gulf and east coast?
“Obamie claiming credit jinxed the whole thing.”
Same as when he campaigns for someone=Destined for failure.
I just want to say thanks to you for your insights in spite of the sniping by some of these armchair know-it-alls.
I certainly don’t know anything about killing wells but can appreciate how much I don’t know having worked two summers offshore and having seen these wells close up including mud and cement operations. Without all the data it would seem hard to figure this out sitting at a computer. Anyway - thanks.
Also, from my fore mentioned coursework, I knew from the get go after seeing the blowout feeds, BP, the US, and the Gulf residents had a mess on its hands w/ no immediate solutions.
I hope they can get Relief Well I tied in soon as relief wells work 99% of the time in these situations.
In your opinion, do you think BP pushed too fast on the Macondo Bore?
In the news conference today...maybe a look into BP next effort. The BP spokesman said they were collecting over 22,000 barrels per day from the riser tool. Before top kill operation.

0 thinks only about liability and who should the finger be pointed at. It’s the lawyer in him. He has no idea what to do about clean-up and has nobody in his network who can help.
Worst case is that the relief wells kill it in a couple of months.
have they tried duct tape?
From what i’ve read, tHe relief wells are the only permanent solution, they would need them anyway. I’ve assumed from early on that this was the worst case scenario and this doesn’t get stopped until they are up and functioning. If the topkill method works, then the men and women working the problem are nothing short of heroes. To conduct this type of repair and under this kind of pressure and scrutiny is unheard of. My prayers for all working on the solutions. I have no experience in oil but a number of years in QA, failure analysis, etc. in a high tech industry. I can’t imagine the conditions they are working under. Apollo 13 is the one thing that comes to mind. I wish them well and appreciate you and others that HAVE worked in this industry sharing your insights and experience in answering our questions.
When I heard that he had mentioned his connection to Hawaii, I couldn’t help but think that this issue is on his mind. Just as it’s on Barney Frank’s mind. I think they all know this is going to break open on them.
I also think he knows that he COULDN’T say at a press conference that he was born in Hawaii, because that would absolutely tie him to what will eventually be proven as a bald-faced lie. He knows that time is coming. I think he’s hoping that the big financial crash and martial law will come before the truth can come out.
Well, there was a real big one in the Gulf when I was a kid. Mexican oil company. Several million barrels (3?, 5?, I just can't recall) into the Gulf from that one. It seems that went on for nearly a year. I also think I remember news back then about a lot of baby sea turtles needed saving from that one. Memories from kid-hood are not that clear. Maybe others can more clearly recall fallout and damage from that huge spill.

A potential burden.
