Christie to teacher: You can quit By: Andy Barr May 26, 2010 03:00 PM EDT
New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie told a disgruntled teacher that if she doesnt like the pay, she doesnt have to do it.
Christie was speaking to a small crowd in a church gymnasium in Rutherford on Tuesday when the Bergen County Record caught the exchange between Kearny teacher Rita Wilson and the governor.
Wilson claimed that if she were getting paid only three dollars an hour for the 30 students she teaches, her salary would be $83,000 a year, a much higher sum than her current take.
Youre getting more than that if you include the cost of your benefits, Christie pointed out.
The teacher responded by saying that she has a masters degree and that her current salary isnt compensating her for the value of her higher education as well as her experience.
To that, the governor responded: Well, you know then that you dont have to do it.

correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the teacher claiming she works 27,667 hours per year ($83K/3 per hour)...
You are correct. I was gonna say that. We agree AGAIN!!!
If you experience an erection that lasts longer than four hours ...
Going off-topic for a bit, I wouldn’t call the doctor. I’d call EVERYONE!
Back on topic: I wish more people, particularly those in leadership positions, were as direct and plain-spoken as Chris Christie.
I think I love him
I pray for his health.
GOOD FOR HIM!
I’m tired of Unions running this country in to the ground.
AMEN!!
There are two thing I never want to see, a teacher who is in it for the money and a lawyer who isn't.

Does she mean $3 per student per hour?
That’s $3 an hour for each of her students, or $90 an hour.
Maybe she was figuring on $3 per hour PER STUDENT,
that would be $90 dollars per hour.
Maybe they should be paid per graduating student...
She's probably a math teacher. Sigh.
I’m underpaid too - but I don’t expect the Governor of my state to fix it, other than by staying the hell out of the way to bring more business to the area.
Cluster tingles, is it? sd
I use a computer at work. I would like a dime every time I use a key on the keyboard.
Has he said anything about the AZ bill?
*eyeroll* With all respect, the curriculum requirements for an M.A. in Education or an Ed.D are not exactly rocket science.
When the change was made uptown, and the Big Man joined the band...
I love it. This guy seriously clanks when he walks.

She must mean $3/hr for each of the 30 students that she teaches. That would be $90/hr, which works out to 922 hours a year. Considering that most schools are in session 180 days, that’s about five hours a day. If she is only counting actual classroom time, those numbers probably come pretty close to working out.
