Teams of American special forces have been authorised to conduct spying missions intended to pave the way for a military strike on Iran in case President Obama orders one, US government sources have confirmed.

The military units would penetrate Iranian territory to reconnoitre potential nuclear targets and make contact with friendly dissident groups, according to a secret directive written by General David Petraeus. The document’s existence was disclosed for the first time yesterday.

It authorises an expansion in the use of US special forces throughout the Middle East, US officials said. However, it is the possibility of American troops operating covertly inside Iran that has the greatest potential to destabilise regional security.

Doesn’t sound like something Zero would do.. so I will assume this is bull meant to prop up his ratings as a “strong commander in cheif” or some such nonsense.

Two possibilities. One is, someone leaked it to thwart it.

The other is it is leaked to put the Iranians off their game, and push them to negotiate. It won’t work until they see the skies dark with cruise missiles.

How many of our spies will now have their heads cut off? How many Americans will die?

Who ever leaked this should be executed. Eric Holder should be looking for this guy. He should have the reporter in jail until he tells who is the source.

>> Two possibilities.

More than that, actually.

Third possibility: there IS no leaked document; the pseudojournalist is making it up from what they conjecture might be happening.

Are you surprised at the possibility that we might have special forces on the ground in Iran? Do you think it’s far-fetched? Do you think the Iranians have considered the possibility and are planning for it?

About f***ing time, if true. Not holding my breath though. In 2001, Bush was warning us about weapons of mass destruction getting into the hands of “terrists”. He didn’t do shit about Iran and neither has Obama.

When my nephew came home after duty in Iraq,
he told me some strange things about the porosity
of the Iran/Iraq border that I found to be unbelievable.

The Iranian dissidents are having a hard enough time as it is. Obama just gave Imanutjob an excuse to arrest more of them and charge them with spying.

First, while what you say about the NYT and treason is true, it's not for this story. This story is from the London Times. In Ole Jolly England.

Otherwise, did you catch this?

However, it is the possibility of American troops operating covertly inside Iran that has the greatest potential to destabilise regional security.

No, it's not the dictators, the war against Israel ongoing for 60 years, nor the use of Terrorism to spread Islam, and especially not the mad mullahs of Shia Iran getting atomic weapons--which, incidentally, they can use against Sunnis as well as Israel and the West....

No, it the possibility of US Troops! Shriek! How bloody distablizing!!!!

Yes, seriously, if this is true and was not an intentional leak by the high command, this would be treason and should carry the appropriate penalty. This should be a hanging offense.

Of course, it wouldn't be the first time. Or the second. They rather make a habit of blowing classified operations on the front page of the Times.
