BP oil leak: Fallen Deepwater Horizon was tapping second largest oil deposit in the world
If there is a single aspect to the dangers of the BP oil leak, it lies in the question CEO Tony Hayward and other BP executives have been avoiding since the first drop of oil went rogue: How much oil is leaking?
The real answer is - more than anyone wants to admit, because the well holds enough oil to make Saudi Arabian drillers jealous.
The oil field the Deepwater Horizon had tapped is said to be the second largest deposit in the world. Viewzone.com reports, The site covers an estimated 25,000 square miles, extending from the inlands of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
The oil deposit is so large, it could produce 500,000 barrels of a day for more than a decade.

That’s what I was thinking! Second largest!?!
Seize it! Push BP right out of it.
1) Don’t assume that people who disagree with you are ignorant, unintelligent, fearful, or maliciously motivated.
2) Don’t panic.
I have nothing further to say on this topic.
So you agree that eperts should study the option.
Very good point, I wondered the same thing.
Didn’t they say we don’t have any oil? Now we’ve got the second biggest deposit in the world?
I got it on the interwebs ...
I disagree with “Nuke it. It’s the only way to be sure”.
It should be studied, but keep in mind it could make a bad situation worse, irreparably worse.
Just like pumping in mud Wednesday could make a bad situation worse (fracturing the casing below the BOP). The only difference being that it is a recoverable situation when the relief well finally kills it.
Thanks for the update.
I was being flippant there. But it’s an option for experts to study. Nothing should be off the teble “just because.”
While we all cross our fingers for the next Rube Goldberg fix.
This is closed season for lobster, they lay their eggs now. June is the month the snapper migrate to the reef to spawn. This could be devastating to marine life for many years. The Manatees are moving back up that way also. It could kill the only living coral reefs, destroy the diving tourism that South Florida and the Keys depend on. It’s just sickening.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the mud injection.
Won’t most of it ride the Stream around FL in deep water?
Hopefully, it would depend on the winds also and now late in the season they let this thing go. Tropical storms or a hurricane could drastically change everything and they are talking August before they can drill the relief well. I’m not buying their story that all of those tar balls that washed up in Key West around Fort Zachary were not from this spill. I don’t believe that for a minute. There were too many of them and too much of a coincidence.
“... they are likely to go belly up...”
When that happens I want back for this country the Alaskan North Slope oil that BP acquired when they bought SOHIO. It is time for that oil to belong to us again.
LA parish president goes after Mary Landrieu etc.
“Nuke it??? Im missing something.”
.... because nothing beats oily birds as an ecological disaster like radioactive SHRIMP.
Here’s my question...if we do seal it off, when can we safely go back and redrill to get that oil!
Fact is, if there really is that much there, at SOME point we need to use it. Not now, obviously stopping the leak is what matters, but eventually, won’t someone want to go back in?
Careful, I heard she was a RINO-type ... just make sure this is not an election year conversion and revert back to form type politician.
