Robin Hood: A Conservative Hero
CDS and NewsReal ^ | 5/24/2010 | Michael van der Galien

It’s popular these days for conservatives to criticize the defender of the poor and the oppressed, Robin Hood. Hood, they say, is nothing more than a socialist pretending to be a hero. He is, if you will, Karl Marx with a bow and couple of arrows. He steels from the wealthy and gives to the poor. It’s socialism in action, or so many contemporary conservative commentators argue.

Although I understand it that conservatives automatically oppose all those who dare “redistribute wealth” (or appear to), they are sorely mistaken to do so with Hood. Dismissing him as a Marxist is ludicrous and counterproductive; the former because he is actually a very American (classically liberal and conservative) hero, the latter because the audience will sympathize with him regardless of the criticism.

I'll never look at Robin Hood the same again. He really is a conservative, especially since in the latest movie he opposes "ruthless oppressors", who came to power illegitimately and abuse those they rule. Ring any bells?

He *steels* from the wealthy

It is really hard to take some of these bloggers seriously when their English, or in this case spelling, is so horrible.

It is?? It never has been for me. Robin Hood didn't steal from the rich; he stole from the tax collector.

Ridley, Russell and Cate were included as commentators in a History Channel documentary about Robin. Pretty good, in general, and, while Cate is not the bright light one would have preferred, Ridley and Russell were astute and intelligent, not to mention very conservative in ideology.

It was a pretty good documentary, all in all.

I have never heard a conservative say that. What a conservative would be opposed to is reinterpreting a legend to suit Marxist ideology.

Robin Hood was a monarchist who opposed a tyrant who had usurped his brother's crown and then raised taxes. Robin was really Robert Fitzooth, Earl of Huntingdon and Esquire of Locksley. Robert (Robin) was of Saxon blood, and his land, including Locksley Hall, was confiscated by the French-speaking Normans.

That is actually the leftist's mischaracterization of Robin Hood. In every retelling of the legend of Robin Hood that even attempts to stick to the legend, Robin Hood steals from the corrupt government to give back to the "poor" the taxes that a corrupt usurper to the throne stole from them. It is not the conservatives who criticize Robin Hood as a socialist. Conservatives tend to oppose policies or laws that try to coopt the moniker of "Robin Hood" but those policies and laws are typically an extension of the very governmental confiscation of private property that Robin Hood fought against in the first place.

I was pleasantly surprised to see two conservative/libertarian movies back to back. Iron Man 2 was the most over the top, pro-capitalism, anti-government movie I have ever seen. Gotta love when Tony Stark was railing against the libtard Senator he said (from memory) "I privatized world peace. I tried working with these guys. What is it these a$$ clowns?".

Robin Hood had a pro-hippie speech by Maid Marian in the end and there was blatant anti-christianity momnents, but overall, a solid conservative movie IMHO.

I’ve never heard a conservative criticize Robin Hood.

I’ve always heard conservatives remind liberals that Robin Hood stole from the tax collector and gave the money back to the taxpayers, and that all the bad people in the story are government figures.

If Robin Hood is a socialists, then so were those that dumped the tea into the bay as a protest against tyrannical taxation. I look at Robin Hood as a personification of tax rebates. If we follow the logic of some, if Hood had kept the money, he would be a capitalist? We are reading way too much into this. Hood is about an “outlaw” that fights against tyranny. Let us not read too much into whether or not he was redistributing the wealth.

Robin Hood has always been a hero to those who have taken a close look at the original story, not the Disneyfied version most are familiar with. The "rich" he was robbing from was the king, and his nobles. He was robbing from the government and giving to the taxpayers.  Sounds like a plan to me.

Iron Man 2 will definitely give you your money’s worth. After watching the opening sequence where he told the Senator to stick it at a congressional hearing, it was all gravy.

in the latest movie he opposes "ruthless oppressors", who came to power illegitimately and abuse those they rule.

But prior to that event he was nothing more than a robber of the rich distributing to the peasants.......

In the end, one could make the same comparison to Fidel Castro........

Sorry but Robin Hood is not a hero in my book of bandits............

And any forrest dwelers who wear green tights are definitely gay...............

Don't cut out good ideas because of poor spelling or grammar. That would be shallow.

I have long seen both arguments; the lefts taking from the rich to give to the poor, and the liberty side; getting rid of an evil tyrant to help the oppressed and enslaved masses.
