Hezbollah mobilises troops

Hezbollah mobilised thousands of militants in southern Lebanon on Friday in response to week-long Israeli defence exercises due to kick off on Sunday, an official from the Shiite militia group said.
‘The Hezbollah fighters have (been instructed) to be completely ready to confront Israeli manoeuvres on Sunday,’ Nabil Qaouk told AFP. ‘Thousands of our fighters will not go to the polls (for municipal elections on Sunday) and will be prepared from today’ for any eventuality, he added.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in 2006 that destroyed much of southern Lebanon, largely a Hezbollah stronghold. Israel attacked Lebanon after Hezbollah guerrillas captured two soldiers in a cross-border raid.
Israel estimates that Hezbollah has since stockpiled more than 40,000 rockets, some of which could reach major Israeli population centers.
And last month, Israeli President Shimon Peres accused Syria of providing Scud missiles to Hezbollah, charges that Damascus has denied.
Dubbed ‘Turning Point 4,’ the defence exercises are designed to prepare emergency responses to rocket strikes on Israel, with sirens due to ring out across the country on Wednesday and Israelis head for shelters. Israel’s Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai emphasised last week that the exercises had been planned long in advance, and had no bearing on the Jewish state’s present relations with its northern neighbours.

Hizbullah getting advanced Iran missiles from Syria ‘on regular basis’

The Israeli intelligence community has determined that Hizbullah received a shipment of solid-fuel rockets from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Officials said the solid-fuel rockets were said to have included the Fateh-110, with a range of more than 200 kilometers.
“Hizbullah in 2010 is very different to Hizbullah in 2006 in terms of military capability, which has advanced a great deal,” Brig. Gen. Yossi Baidatz, a senior Israeli military intelligence officer, said. “Hizbullah is now regarded by the Syrians as a component of their defense establishment.” On May 4, Baidatz, head of military intelligence’s research department, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Hizbullah was acquiring advanced missiles and rockets through Syria. The brigadier said the Iran was sponsoring the weapons shipments to Hizbullah bases in Lebanon.
“Syria plays a significant role in the growing strength of Hizbullah’s rocket arsenal,” Baidatz said. “Weapons are sent to Hizbullah from Syria on a regular basis under the direction of the Syrian and Iranian regimes.”
Baidatz said Hizbullah has also received an extended-range version of the Scud-class missile. The officer did not identify the missile, although Western intelligence sources said this was the Scud C, with a range of 550 kilometers.
“The shipments of long-range missiles which have been reported recently are only the tip of the iceberg,” Baidatz said. “The long ranges of the missiles in the hands of Hizbullah enable them to place their launchers deep inside of Lebanon, and they cover ranges that are much longer than what we have seen in the past.”
Hizbullah has also received the Syrian-origin variant of Fateh-110. Officials identified this as the M-600 rocket, with an extended range of 300 kilometers.

“Hizbullah Sources: Israel Will be Bombarded with 15 Tons of Explosives a Day in Case of a War”
SNIPPET: “Sources informed in Hizbullah’s military branch revealed on Tuesday that that in case of a new war between the party and Israel, the latter will be targeted with a “different kind, quantity, and intensity of rockets” than the July 2006 war.
They said that the party has increased its rocket power, and Israel should be expected to be bombarded with 15 tons of explosives a day if it waged a war on Lebanon.
The sources told the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai: “If we assume that Hizbullah possesses the same kind, caliber, or parts of rockets that Iran has, then that means that the Zilzal rocket, which holds a ton of explosives, and Fateh-110 and M600 rockets, each carrying half a ton of explosives, will be used in the next war.””

“Israel: Syria Transferred M-600 Missiles to Hizbullah”
SNIPPET: “Syria has delivered advanced M-600 missiles to Hizbullah within the past year, Haaretz newspaper quoted Israeli defense officials as saying Wednesday.
The M-600, a Syrian copy of the Iranian Fateh-110, has a range of 300 kilometers and is capable of carrying a half-ton warhead.”
SNIPPET: “The latest Israeli claims come only weeks after accusations that Syria had transferred long-range Scud missiles to Hizbullah.”

“FATEH-110”
BY DR. AZRIEL LORBER
THE MIDDLE EAST MISSILE MONITOR
October 5, 2004
SNIPPET: “It was thus refreshing, so to speak, to actually see an Iranian TV program which in fact did show the experimental launching of one such weapon - claimed to be the Fateh-110, and preceded by views of the missile on the launcher.”
SNIPPET: “The resulting new aerodynamic configuration will suffice to give the missile a much better trajectory control, with terminal accuracy limited only by the quality of the guidance inputs - inertial or GPS - which may justify the claims of the Iranians. Furthermore, this could be achieved by the usage of the fairly small fins on the nose with the attendant advantages of smaller actuators and lesser power requirements.
However, the better trajectory control has several other advantages. When flying a pure ballistic trajectory, the range of the FATEH-110 missile is generally given (In the literature) as approximately 170 kms, which also gives an apogee of more than 60 kms. If however at some point after burnout (but most probably after coming back down to an altitude of about 8 kms) the missile is flown in an aerodynamic gliding (coasting) mode, exchanging its excess velocity and altitude to aerodynamic lift, some 50 kms can be added to the range. Furthermore, the aerodynamic trajectory will complicate prediction of missile’s target and flight path and make interception more difficult.
Finally, for a small price in range, such a missile could maneuver in the lower atmosphere, further complicating the problem of interception.”
