His Dad also wins straw polls all the time, do you think that means the great majority of Republicans actually want Ron Paul for President? The Paul family seem to be very good at organizing, but that won't make either of them particularly good general election candidates for statewide offices.
Yes, I would vote for Rand Paul over the Democrat. I just don't think Rand was the better candidate. You watch, it is going to turn out that he will have all sorts of wierd views to defend, wierd associates he will have to explain, etc.
The American public does not want Libertarians. I realize Rand is not his father, but once the public finds out what he really stands for it may just make Rand seriously flawed enough to be vulnerable to the Democrat. The establishment candidate was suitably conservative as I recall, and would probably have coasted into the Senate with no problem.
This was no straw poll.
This was the Republican US Senate Primary.
And as pointed out above, Rand Paul got more Primary votes for US Senator than any statewide Republican candidate in history.
I'd say he enjoys some real support.
Greyson was a non-starter. He wouldn’t take a position that even sounded remotely conservative. Earmarks, yeah boy! TARP, you bet! And the list goes on. Greyson was and is the kind of “republican” that most conservatives despise. He tried to talk the talk at election time, but damned if he is going to even consider the walk.
Even if he did, what use it is to put another RINO in the Senate? Lord knows we have plenty already....

Which was a GOP record. There aren't all that many registered Repubs in KY, just people who vote GOP in the fall.
You are going to be very pleasantly surprised, even thrilled at Senator Paul's performance.
But Paul says he won't change his core approach. "People are already saying now you need to weave and dodge," Paul said in his victory speech on Tuesday. "Now you need to give up your conservative message. You need to become a moderate. You need to up give up the Tea Party, you need to distance yourself.
But he pledged to continue to tout "tea party" themes.
"The tea party message is not a radical message. It's not an extreme message," he said. "What is extreme is a $2 trillion deficit."
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex), Paul's father, told supporters in Kentucky, "You think only the Republicans are disgruntled? Everybody is disgruntled, especially the independents."
Democrats are still eager to run against him.
"At some point, he's got to be for something," Conway said in an interview before the primary. "People are angry and frustrated and I'm somewhat frustrated, but the question is how do you use that anger. Do you use it to heat the building or do you use it tear the building down?
Conway said he would ask Paul "what's your dream for this country, you're against everything?
