DETROIT - A spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department says a 7-year-old girl named Ayana Jones was accidently shot and killed by a DPD officer.

Watch the latest video report by Fox 2's Roop Raj.

It happened in the 4000 block of Lillibridge at 12:40 Sunday morning. According to Detroit Police , officers went to the house to arrest a murder suspect, with a valid search warrant.

The suspect was wanted in another crime that happened on Friday in Detroit. A 17-year-old high school student was shot and killed in front of a party store. They had reason to believe the man inside the home on Lillibridge was the gunman in that murder.

If a civilian did that it would be called Manslaughter.

Sounds like the mother not the cops were responsible over this.

What, there wasn’t a family pet to shoot?

SWAT team member. However it wasn’t his fault, ‘the gun went off.’ You know, the gun did it. It was nervous, had a late night out, tired. Officials say an investigation of the gun, and maybe retraining of the gun will occur.

There was some sort of confrontation between a woman inside and one of the officers. The officer's gun went off

Not enough information here to jump to such a conclusion.

If the mom was physically struggling with an armed cop and the gun "went off," I think you'd be absolutely right. In fact, in some states I think mom could be charged with first degree murder.

If she and the cop were involved in a verbal altercation and the gun "went off," the cop should at minimum be charged with manslaughter.

People should have SWAT team, flash bang, rapid forced entry classes so that they can behave according to procedure while being woken up.

Other wise, it might occur to someone that people might behave irrationally in such a startling situation and thus, in violation of suspect behavior code, be shot.

Couldn’t have been the gun. I had a FReeper tell me two days ago that it is “bullets” that kill people.

I just don’t get this bashing. They were trying to arrest a murder suspect. Are all the second guessers on FR now automatically down on swat teams? Sorta like muslim terrorist taking refuge in mosques and behing skirts so we can’t go after them. I’m sorry, you live with murdering scum you got to take the chance something bad may happen to your precious baby.

Officers used a stun grenade to enter the home due to the violent nature of the original crime, which likely caused chaos and confusion.

More dynamic entry BS tactics

I certainly understand coming to arrest a dirt bag armed to the teeth and using surprise tactics like busting down a door with a valid warrant and you identify yourself as law enforcement, but this para-military crap has got to stop.

Hate to be a monday morning quarterback here, but I gotta wonder why, if they new their perp was in the house, not just surround the place and wait him out?

At least it wasn’t a no-knock raid for a dope dealer.

SWAT team.
One in the morning.
Flash bangs through the window.
Kids on the couch.

I’d say the team owns this one.

Or simply choose not to live with a murder suspect.

I never thought of that. That the gun itself might be innocent and that it was the ...bullet that went off on its own.

Hopefully the gun and the bullets were separated so that they can't get their story right.

O.K. no “Para-Military” crap. Just knock on the door and ask nicely if Mr. Murder Scum could please come to the door so we can take him into custody and advoid any unpleasant shouting and disturbance that may escalate in injury or death to any innocent bystanders that responsible adults have criminally placed in harms way. Yea, that would work.
