For the second time this week the McCain campaign tried to disentangle itself from embarrassing comments made by surrogates stumping for the Republican presidential candidate.
Earlier this week, Sen. John McCain rejected a statement by his top economics adviser, former Sen. Phil Gramm, who complained that America is "a nation of whiners" and the country is in a "mental recession."
McCain joked Thursday that Gramm, once touted as a possible Treasury secretary in a McCain administration, would make a good ambassador to Belarus.
Today the campaign tried to recover from a comment by Carly Fiorina, McCain's most visible woman surrogate and a possible vice presidential pick.
Fiorina, the former chief of Hewlett-Packard, left McCain speechless this week when she seemed to criticize health insurance companies for covering Viagra for men but not covering birth control for women -- a point made frequently by abortion rights groups.

Amazing. Thanks, Sarah!
Insurance should cover neither birth control nor Viagra.
McAmnesty and Fiorina. What is Palin thinking?
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
Actually, low doses of Viagra can be used to improve circulation in general. It should be covered for this purpose. And if an Estrodiol or Estrodiol/Progesterone pill is used to treat PCOS or other hormonal disorder, it certainly should be covered. However, while sex can be good for your health, I don’t think that these should be covered for recreational use.
.
At least viagra is a drug predicated upon correcting failing God given normal life function. Abortions are predicated upon TERMINATING God given normal life function.
Sarah is brilliant. She has drawn people to these races. People are now paying attention and making up there own minds and will pick the real conservative. Sarah rocks.
Any pro-abort, politician or otherwise, is an accomplice in the largest crime against humanity in history, including Stalin’s estimated 30,000,000 victims. Estimated abortions in US are 40-50 million(since Roe v Wade) depending on data source. And, that obviously doesn’t include world wide stats.
In many ways Sarah reminds me of George Bush. Bush was a genuinely nice guy, God Loving, patriotic and could be an effective leader at times. But he was loyal to a fault, wanted to get along and let friendship get in the way of doing the right thing. He set the table for the disaster that we are facing today.
Sarah seems to be cut from the same cloth. She is backing these RINOs because they were friendly to her at a point when she was an unknown. That's all fine and dandy but we learned a hard lesson and I'm not about to repeat the same mistake again.
There seems to be a problem in the McLame campaign - can it be cured by inserting shoe in mouth before speaking or by making sure it has its facts straight before allowing McLame to speak. The 2008 campaign of mclame strived to make palin be the scape goat, but it truly must be mclame’s professional people Mr. Incompetento
“..stumping for the Republican presidential candidate”?.
Oh. It’s a story by ABC.
I agree with you. Neither should be covered. I love to have my insurance companies spend money on unwanted pregnancies instead.
If god intends for your peter to peter out and for a man to take a break from sex that isn’t intended to produce children then who are we to decide that he’s wrong?
You mean people can't buy their own birth control without health insurance? It is not THAT expensive.
Hmm. Reminds me of the saying, "When you rob Peter to pay Paul, you get a sore Peter."
If one is in favor of viagra for men, why wouldn’t they be for birth control for woman to protect them from being impregnated by those viagra energized men, and then facing the question of pro or anti-choice. What ever happened to logic in this country?
MCCain is an evil man.
Actually agree with you. Birth control pills, and not the morning after pill (as they are often confused) are the best of the available methods at preventing pregnancy. Effective use of birth control pills is the best way to reduce the number of abortions in this country. Half of pregnancies in this country are unplanned and most people have not a clue about what methods work and which do not. Condoms when combined with birth control pills is over 99.99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
