Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

There's probably a reason for that.
As a woman, I could not agree with you more. Traditionally women were seen as the guardians of morality. Now after 40 years of liberal indoctrination, many women seem to see their role as enablers.
I am just so glad that I was brought up by my simple, old country mother then one of these “modern, enlightened” women. At least my mother had enough sense to look after me and keep me out of trouble.
Now I notice that the Dems are dropping their long-held anti-gun positions. What is that about?
Maybe the Dems and RINOS know that these issues do not come before congress that often, so they can fudge by saying whatever it takes to be popular with their voters. Also, the RINOS and Dems probably fear the pro-life and pro-gun organizations since they are very vocal, well organized and well funded. They may be backing off those issues because they fear the pro-life and pro-gun groups.
One thing that I have been learning in the past five years or so, is that not all is as it appears to be in politics. There are many impostors in politics, and I admit that I have been fooled once or twice, first by the Dems, then by the Repubs. We have to not take politicians at face value, that is what they want us to do. They want us to be charmed by their charismatic personalities and their carefully researched and rehearsed answers. It is hard to tell what politicians really think because it is their job to know everything they can about us but very often we know very little about them. That is exactly the way they want it. They spend millions to do research on what the voters think, then they parrot what we think back to us. We think “Wow, that guy really thinks the way I do”. Very often it is just a calculated act. This has been going on a long time in politics. This is the enemy - the culture of deception in politics. If we realized this, we would be half way there.
Do you know what church she was raised in?
Tolerance is acceptance.
Any woman who doesn’t see abortion for the great oppression of women that it is, must have either a guilty secret or have been brainwashed by feminists at some point in their lives. Abortion is great for men who want responsibility-free sex. For everyone else, it involves pain, death, or both. I am very, very disappointed in Laura Bush. I had been considering buying her book, but now I most certainly will not.
Sorry, I don't.
Methodist. She went to SMU, also. She’s about my age, and the Methodist Church wasn’t apostate when we were kids.
She never insinuated herself into her husband's policies, so frankly, it was her own business.
Neither you nor I have any idea of the sway she held on W... they sleep together... they have lived together for decades... to think otherwise is to deny reality. Anyone that is married knows this as fact.
