Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

I was thinking of doing the same thing starting today, also - and I did the exact opposite.
I wish you success!
Remember when GWB was once asked if he would veto an unconstitutional bill, and he asked, “How would I know if it were unconstitutional?”
Well, dear Laura would almost surely not know if a duaghter had an abortion. Some things are just not told these days.
Hey, Clint, that wasn’t very nice.
My point is that she is about as ‘can be thrown in our faces’ as Meeghan McCain and her mother. The Bush’s are gone. Onward and forward.
The only thing that hacks me is that her opinions were kept from the original voters for her husband. Christian conservatives. I don’t recall this ever being brought up. I don’t know if it would have influenced the Christian vote another way, but it might have.
Anyway, they’re gone. They’re out. We’ve got Obama and how we’re going to defeat him to worry about. THAT is my point. If you wish to let this frighten you, so be it. It’s history for me.
When Bush 43 became president, I distinctly remember a news piece that talked about both Laura and Barbara (her mother-in-law) being pro-choice. I remember talking to my husband about it years ago. The only revelation that is new to me is her opinion on gay marriage. Her opinion on abortion has been in the news before.
I’m flattered...ty
Just a hint I learned from an old wise man...
“If they are pointing a finger at you, they have three pointing at themselves!
Hope that makes sense.
Always good to see you!
I help wagglebee with the Homosexual Agenda and Moral Absolutes ping lists. My vacation starts tomorrow!!!
I don’t have a TV and never listen to radio so if I’m not on FR I don’t know what’s going on in the world and I think that’s what I need for a couple of weeks.
:-)
No one. She wrote a book and told all. Can’t say she’s a fake and that she hid it, when no one asked. I’m wondering, is writing a book some sort of therapy for some?
But, see, the reason we have Obama is GWB!!!!
I was better than usual today.
But for real starting tomorrow (except I will check freepmail. And it’s not as though I have nothing to do...maybe I’ll even clean my house.
Sorry, should have pinged you on my post 163.
Laura and Barbara have a conflict of interest: Both have already been born. I truly believe that no Bush is pro-life, but many have mouthed the expression to fool the meek.
Oh, no! It’s Bushes fault! We have Obama because he’s black. Well, half. That’s why we have Obama.
I remember a time that housewives were defensive of hiring help--it was anti-Democratic to pay someone to clean up after you. Long time ago.
There's a reason that GW spoke better Spanish than English. Nannies, yardmen, maids, cooks...remember how Bar used to boast that she didn't cook, even with all those children?
We've got the immigration problem in large part because the wives of elite Republicans are too lazy to take care of their own houses and families.
as the mother of an adopted son and a daughter three years later by birth, never will or would I accept abortion. life is a Gift....p>
as for the Gay /lib. life style I find it totally sick and evil...
I will respect her for her role as First Lady for eight years and how gracious she was...but I will not be wasting my few dollars to purchase her book, nor will I bother to read it from the Library...
My message to Laura Bush...you have disappointed many of your loyal followers...so sad...
I remember the same - about her being pro-abortion. Don’t know where or when. I do remember questioning it - thinking it might be spin.
I should have added...
I heard her speak in the news piece. She said that she thought abortion should be available, but rare.
This was not spin.
Sorry then, please forgive me. It looked like you were supporting her, my mistake. I spent my first 6 years on FR debating the Sodomite agenda with a lot of research on the medical/psychiatry side. I have no patience for that or abortion. I’m tired from all that jumping to conclusions, thanks for having a level head.
