Pelosi: Democrats reduced taxes to historic low By Jordan Fabian - 05/11/10 02:56 PM ET

Congressional Democats are responsible for the lowest U.S. tax bills in a half-century, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Tuesday.

Pelosi was responding to a USA Today report that said Americans' tax bills in 2009 were at their lowest point since the Truman presidency.

"Democratic leaders in Congress and President Obama have produced the lowest tax bills for the American people in more than half a century," Pelosi said in a statement. "Because of changes Democrats have made in tax policy, more than 100 million Americans have more money to support their families, consumers have more to spend at local businesses and our middle class is reaping the rewards."

The report showed that tax levels fell by 23 percent in 2009 while personal income levels fell by 2 percent. People on average had 9.2 percent of their personal income taken by the government in taxes as opposed to the 12 percent average over the last 50 years.

USA Today credited the Democrats' stimulus bill for lowering taxes, but also tax breaks put in place by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Lower consumer spending also resulted in lower sales tax receipts.

Democrats have spent the day plugging the report, and Pelosi took a jab at Republicans for not backing the stimulus plan, which included tax credits.

“Despite all their rhetoric, when the time came to support lower taxes for 98 percent of Americans, Republicans in Congress voted no," she said. "Not a single Republican voted for tax relief, even in the midst of the greatest recession since Herbert Hoover that they created through the policies of the Bush administration."

Critics of the study have said that high government spending is catapulting the country toward unsustainable debt.

is she talking about the historic low revenues collected?

That was my take on it as well. We've increased unemployment to record highs!... Fewer people paying taxes than ever!... Yippee!

Get the people with the nets and the straight jackets...

Obama will announce big spending cuts and the media will be saying the Dems are fiscally conservative before the election. Watch and see.

Some of them are trying to call Kagan a moderate, lol.

They are taking in less tax money and think they are giving us tax breaks? What about the record levels of unemployed? The record deficit spending?

Those of us still working at "above poverty level" jobs are getting creamed on our taxes.

Can we remove these people from office on charges of Gross Stupidity and Perpetrating Massive Fraud?

She must be quoting the study touted on MSN money:

The lowest tax level in decades
< One study says Americans are paying the lowest taxes since Harry Truman was president.

Tax protest © Brian Hagiwara/Brand X/CorbisWe hear lots of talk about high taxes, but the truth is that Americans are paying their lowest level of taxes since 1950, USA Today reports.

About 9.2% of Americans' personal income went to federal, state and local taxes in 2009, the newspaper reports. Historically, we've paid about 12%.

* Video: Turn tax refund into tax credit

Why are taxes so low? Several reasons. First, there were the tax cuts that were part of the $862 billion stimulus package last year, USA Today reports. A third of that stimulus went straight to tax cuts.

Second, the newspaper reports that Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush cut income taxes dramatically for poor and middle-class families over the years. Now, the federal tax burden for some of them has been cut to zero.

Finally, the recession has led many people to rein in spending, meaning they didn't pay as much in sales taxes in 2009.

The tax rate will surely rise in the next few years, however. One tax policy expert told USA Today that the stimulus tax credits are set to expire at the end of 2010. So lawmakers will be considering whether to extend them into 2011.

The people in the comments at the link think this is bogus, too.

They just raised taxes in the healthcare bill. Plus the requirement that people buy insurance. The Democrats are taking lies to a new level - that of official government propaganda.

I thought this was “the Onion”.

This is the same delusional woman whose party constantly rants about “correcting the Bush mistakes” (tax cuts) - and gloating about the pending expiration of the 2001/3 tax cuts.

Next year’s tax bills are gonna bite hard.

An average tax bill will fall when only 50% of the people pay taxes.

When half of America has a tax bill of $0.00, or get a credit from the taxpayers, then you might have a lower tax bill.

Pelosi HAS contributed tremendously to the DEBT LOAD of ALL AMERICANS...and will, if our Republic survives, go down in history as one of the most despicable characters to ever occupy her office.
