Worst-Paying College Degrees
Yahoo ^ | 10 May, 2010 | Charles Purdy

There's no denying the value of a college education: According to recent U.S. Census surveys, the median salary for college grads is more than $20,000 higher than that of people with only a high school diploma. And the unemployment rate for people with bachelor's degrees is almost half the rate for people without.

But some degrees are worth more than others, as PayScale.com shows in its 2010 report on the earning power of bachelor's degrees.

A great observation. Check out Sowell’s Education In America. He directs some of his harshest criticism toward degrees in education. Of course, PhD’s in that field bellyache about not being paid the same as a PhDs in Physics or Chemistry. Another bete noire of Sir Thomas is Ethnic Studies, particulary in the fields of Black and Hispanic studies. He notes that Asian-Americans don’t get degrees in such nonsense, nor do they have spokesmen like Sharpton and Jackson. They’re too busy getting a Medical Degree or Degree in Engineering.

"Median salary for a teacher in New Jersey is 75,000,
not including benefits. The pension is quite generous
too."

Well, the pension can be quite generous. Except
this year in California, they're looking for
$40-plus billion to shore up the teacher's retirement
system. Maybe the governor can help the teachers train
as body builders.

I got my BA in English. It only took me three years to figure out that a nice MBA would go very well with an English degree.

BTW, shortly I'll be retiring; does anyone want to buy my old MBA? I'll throw in the English degree for nothing.

Damn....I wish I worked at a Surf Shop...and made what I make now.

One of my kids had a Swim coach that had a BS in Physics...but couldn't find a job. She was great...a good coach actually. But the pay wasn't where it needed to be for her......education.

If you have passion for what you do, and you are determined to be the best at it, and do whatever it takes, it doesn’t matter what your degree is, you will be successful. But most people aren’t willing to do that, they try to coast, and think the degree alone will make them successful.

“I always like to wish ill on people I’ve never met. < /sarc>”

Thank you for reminding me what’s important. I admit I sometimes use waaaaayyyy to much emotion in my responses on FR. (Sometimes my emotion passes anger and goes straight to idiocy.)

>>I wonder how we ever got to a place where people went into advanced education simply to get a job or play football.

Part of it is because employers don’t expect people to be able to do much with a modern H.S. education. College is the new H.S., for many of these degrees.

My girl...ticked me off when she told me her plans. Never would have thought that was her...future.

Long story short...she had it figured out. She's a networking, goal seeking, workaholic...WHEN she is focused.

She has been published, and worked with some "famous" people....and she's only been licensed for 3-4 months now. The darn girl is good..at what she is doing. Got to hand it to her....

Where's your SD....maybe they need to get together.

I notice how they didn’t list Womyn’s Studies. I guess they all go to work at the death mills.

I had to laugh at your post. My hairdresser has an education degree from a pricey private university. She worked as a stylist while she put herself through school. She quickly learned cutting and coloring hair pays a lot better than teaching. She graduated 6 years ago with lots of student loans and put the degree in the file cabinet. She now manages her own salon and made close to six figures last year.

“most social workers are very liberal, and Columbia is as liberal as it gets.”

That would explain why so many children in the system are abused and the overall level of corruption.
