Tea Party Wins Victory In Utah As Incumbent GOP Senator Loses Bid For Nomination

Amy Gardner May 9, 2010

The national "tea party" movement toppled its first incumbent Saturday as long-serving Sen. Robert F. Bennett was defeated at the Utah Republican Party's nominating convention, the most powerful demonstration yet of the anti-Washington tide that is altering the nation's political landscape.

Bennett, seeking a fourth term after 18 years in office, became the first sitting senator to fall in the ideological battle being waged in his party. Although he has long been viewed as a reliable conservative with deep Mormon roots, Republicans rallied behind two other candidates -- neither of whom has held political office -- who will compete for the nomination at a June primary.

National tea party organizers embraced the victory as a major first step toward returning the Republican Party to its conservative foundations of limited government and low taxes. At the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, tea party activists cheered and celebrated after Bennett lost.

"This is a symbol that the tea party movement and the broader limited-government agenda is huge," said Brendan Steinhauser, grass-roots director for the national tea party organization FreedomWorks, which set up a booth at the convention to herald Bennett's defeat. "It's the center of American politics. It's everything that we've been saying it is. It's not just a protest movement; it's a political force

As I understand it, Romney had just endorsed this loser.

Romney is an idiot.

I’m assuming Bennett is a RINO.

Not so much. That is one of the things that makes this kind of extraordinary. His sins were two-fold ... Bennett had voted for TARP, the infamous "troubled assets relief program," and he had cosponsored a limp-wristed version of obamacare. That coupled with his promise on first being elected that he would seek only two terms, and this was actually his fourth.

Overall, his fellow Utahans were not so happy with his recent shenanigans. He drew the least support of three candidates at the state convention.

But, but... Timothy M. Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, says Bob Bennett is “one of the most conservative members of the U.S. Senate”!

Speaking of his votes that cost him the nomination, Bennett said: "I wouldn't have cast them any differently even if I'd known at the time it would cost me my career."
THAT'S THE FRIGGIN' PROBLEM....POLITICAL OFFICE SHOULD NEVER BE A FRIGGIN' CAREER!! GOOD RIDDANCE YOU OLD FART!!!

Are these people who lose going to vote with the dems now? We will see how much anger they have.

He's not a RINO per se, but he's a symptom of what's wrong with Republicans in Washington. He wanted to compromise on Obamacare and he voted for the bailout. Plus he said he was only going to run for 2 terms.

The Tea Party movement is all about forcing Republicans to return to their roots. We don't want to work with the Democrats or make liberal legislation more conservative. It's this compassionate conservatism, reaching across the aisle crap causing frustration that in large part is driving this movement.

Make sure the person voted in is a real conservative. The lefties and RINOS are counting on us voting one of them in.

Hey California, We don’t need Charlie Crist in a skirt in the Senate. We need Chuck DeVore.

Although he has long been viewed as a reliable conservative

A quick scan of rankings at www.conservative.org puts him in the bottom half of the Republicans in the Senate. This is not what we should have from one of the most conservative states in the country. I can live with a low-80s Senator from Mass or New Hampshire, but not from Utah.

Love the DNC clown at the end of the article claiming the Tea Party is extreme. Nope, you ‘RATS are the extremists and lying douchebags! Throw all you BUMS out ... ‘RAT and RINO alike.

Do you think that since Sarah endorsed McCain that the Tea Partiers will NOT go after him? I mean; Sarah is front-and-center of the Tea Party. So, how could they work to defeat McCain, whom she endorsed.

If Juan McAmnesty is not defeated then the GOP as a party is finished. He’s enemy #1 in obstructing the GOP return to its roots. He is to be defeated at ALL costs. Palin, sadly, doesn’t get it.
