I can't imagine a worse nightmare...a young mother with child at my door crying for food.
(BTW, I've stored some food for her too)

If we are in total meltdown mode, I wonder if she would even make it from where she was from to your door.

But I know what you mean.

Realize - if you feed them, you can (if the situation is a bad one) not let them go!

Feeding them then letting them go to blab to roaming hoardes where you are and what you got is not really a good idea!

My wife and I had that conversation a couple of months ago.If an elderly couple or someone with small children showed up starving,of course we would feed them.There are several reasons that we would do this,ranging from it's the right thing to do,to we aren't willing to become unredeamable people,and finally God is watching us all.
