WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The American economy added 290,000 jobs in April, which was much better than expected despite temporary hiring for the 2010 U.S. Census. Excluding Census workers, 224,000 nonfarm jobs were created, with the unemployment rate edging up to 9.9% from 9.7%, the Labor Department reported Friday.

we’re at 15% in western N.C. with the local food bank being pushed to the max.

and if it came out that it was low, I guarantee the news would just happen to come out after the evening snooze.

Totally unexpected, I expect; especially since the April numbers have all those temporary census workers distorting the unemployment rate lower. Wait for the bounce back when all those temporary census jobs disappear.

Zero called a presser this morning, I wonder how he'll try to spin this. ..of course unemployment rises, it is spring, people don't want to be stuck working when they can be outdoors in the nice weather.. also, the bad weather in the South East has caused the numbers to rise.. and the moderate weather in the North also contributed to the increase in unemployment.

my theory is those census workers will transform into paid election workers - and we know whose election they will be working for

Actual article title:
290,000 jobs created in April; jobless rate 9.9%
Per a thread yesterday, Obama is supposed to give a presser this morning.
Apparently, these new numbers were
expected.

The consensus was for around 200K payroll jobs and the unemployment rate declining slightly to 9.6%. The estimates for temporary Census 2010 hiring were around 100K, so the market expectation was for about 100K payroll jobs ex-Census. So the 290,000 with 230,000 from the provate sector is a pretty good number.
Note: the largest increase in Census 2010 hiring will happen in May - perhaps 500K payroll jobs - and then all of those jobs will be unwound over the next 6 months.

Agree. It’s much worse than is being reported, and it’s going to get worse under the watchful eyes of the hopey, changey’s with their Marxist bent.
