I would have paid money if anyone at the school had been asked what Cinco de Mayo celebrated, what year the event occured and would have paid $100 to any student or faculty who knew the answer.

For the record, 1862, Puebla, which is sort of near Monterrey. It occured when Mexico defaulted on its foreign date to the French, among others. The French invaded and suffered a minor defeat to a numerically inferior Mexican army before the French went on to excecute Mexico’s president, conquer and govern the country for another 5 or 6 years.
