INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Sen. Dan Coats surged back four other Republican Senate hopefuls to clinch the party's nomination Tuesday night.

GOP leaders had high hopes that Coats, a senator for about eight years in the 1990s, would be a shoo-in for the nomination. National Republicans have backed him since he launched his campaign in February, shortly before Democrat Evan Bayh made his surprise announcement that he wouldn't seek a third term.

“He will win this seat (a net gain), and hold it until he retires. He will be a mostly reliable Conservative, though not perfect.”

Thank you. I remember most RINOs, and I DO NOT remember Coates being one of them...he may be a bit soft in some places, but he beats the hell out of ANY Democrat that could have that seat.

Dan Coats had me at: “Clinton’s a scumbag.”
(And he’ll get religion after this November.)

"He has a lifetime American Conservative Rating of 90 percent.

And you think he’s a RINO?"

So do John McCain & Lindsey Graham... what is your point.

He has a 90 percent lifetime rating by the American Conservative Union.

His last year in office he had as good of a voting record as Fred Thompson and a better one than Rick Santorum.

I read that article earlier from the link posted down thread and I was a little skeptical. Remember, the author was pushing the other guy and it looked like he did some cherry picking to shed the worst possible light on Coats. I remember Coats as a senator and I don’t remember ever worrying about him. I believe that on the critical issues and votes, he will stand with the caucus, ie., he won’t be a “maverick” or join with the two or three goofballs who side with the rats.

It doesn’t matter now anyway. Gotta go with Coats.

FRegards,
LH

Hostettler and Stutzman split the conservative vote and the RINO Coats won.

My instincts are never, ever to trust a gun grabber. But he apparently disavows some of his previous idiocy so hopefully he can beat the democrat. The democrat that the NRA has endorsed.

All good points, but sadly this one really nailed it:

“Why in the Hell did Indiana Republicans vote for this RINO? Did they even bother researching all the candidates, or did they just for the guy with a familiar sounding name?”

In short, yes.

Dan Coats is an Evangelical who graduated from Wheaton College. Some conservatives voted for Coats because he was an evangelical.

If I could have 51 senators like Jesse Helms, I’d take it in a heartbeat.

The NRA likes to occasionally endorse a Democrat the way the ACLU occasionaly likes to defend Illinois Nazis. I take those endorsements with a grain of salt.

In this case, all they had to do was look at Coat’s record.

No, they don’t research anything in IN. Hossier just mark a name they may have heard of, and they are not alone in doing this. Seems that 49 other states do pretty much the same

Both Fred Thompson and Rick Santorum were also called RINOS at some point, Rick for something about online weather, and Fred for campaign finance reform.
