That's an interesting point: maybe he was in the SUV when the fireworks ignited, and was aghast to find that he was still alive?
But after thinking about it, I think I was wrong about him chickening out -- at least at that moment. Why would he have installed a crude alarm clock when he could just push the button?

The whole idea of suicide bombing is you compensate for your basic genetic and cultural inferiority by having enough religious fervor to stick around to the very end to make sure your crime succeeds. This dude didn't stick around. He skedaddled, and a concerned citizen set off the alarm. In fact, he was so incompetent, that even the forces of Janet Incompetano were able to round him up swiftly.
