This is not the time for silence. It's time for our various sports commissioners to speak.
Loudly and clearly.
That means NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should make his opinion known. So should MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. The same goes for the heads of the NBA, the NHL and any other sports league that does business in Arizona.
Their collective message to Arizona should leave no room for interpretation:
If Senate Bill 1070, which requires police to question people about their immigration status and demand to see their documents if they suspect the person is in the U.S. illegally, goes into effect July 29, then you can say goodbye to a plethora of sporting events. That means no MLB All-Star Game in 2011. No more Super Bowls. No more BCS Championship games. And it should mean heavy economic sanctions until the law gets repealed.
End of story. No discussion. No compromise. There's precedent.
Following the failure of a 1990 proposition to recognize Martin Luther King's birthday as a holiday in Arizona, the NFL moved Super Bowl XXVII from Arizona to California. Arizona finally added MLK Day, and Super Bowl XXX was played in Tempe.
In 2001, the NCAA announced a two-year moratorium – the ban continues – on awarding predetermined postseason events to South Carolina. And the Atlantic Coast Conference moved its basketball tournaments in 2011, 2012 and 2013 from South Carolina to North Carolina because the Confederate battle flag, a symbol of slavery and oppression, remains on display at the state capitol.
Sometimes, financial penalties are the only way to effect change. Some of you will fire off angry e-mails because you believe columns about politics have no business on the sports pages. You're wrong.
Big business is synonymous with politics.

I hope my governor continues to stand firm on this. Think about it. Who is really getting hurt by these boys cotting? No conventions. No “meetings”. No sporting events. I’m not going to mention any names but their initials are SEIU. The commie thugs’ members are going to really take it in the shorts. And that’s a good thing. They can’t pay their union dues if they aren’t working.

Unless and until there is a specific LEGAL basis for excluding Arizona for any major league event, these asshats should keep their mouths shut.
Don’t wanna got to AZ to play? Great — that is called a forfeit.
Wat to change the venue for sports events? You better have cause, else you will pay every dime, including reasonable projected revenue, to AZ and its businesses, then pay it again when you have the event in whatever liberal hellhole you move them to.

The people running the NFL and MLB, and (NHL for that matter)don't give a rats ass about illegal aliens who don't buy tickets , and REAL AMERICANS, who do, and who they don't want to piss off.
The law mirrors the federal statutes. The problem is that if the state law is evil, so is the federal statute. The border is the problem! Therefore the sports folks should boycott any states impacted by the federal statute and in particular, any state with a border. This means that no there should be no games in such states, like, oh, Texas! Ya like that Mr. Dallas Morning News drama queen?
Why not go all the way, Hypocrite: the commissioners should boycott the entire United States because it’s the failure of the Federal Government to uphold the rule of law that put Arizona in this position in the first place.

I agree. These athletic organizations forget where they get their money. They boycott AZ, we boycott them.

I hope the sponsors of these professional leagues fire off memos to these organizations to shut up and stay out of controversial issues. If NBA, NFL or MLB is to keep sticking theirs noses into political issues then the sponsors could suffer too.
Two can play the boycott game you know. If those organizations want to boycott AZ then we should boycott those organizations and the sponsors who sponsor them.
Why do these athletes only get involve in race related issues??? If Obama was to tax away their hard earned money they say nothing, but when a law is passed in AZ that has NO effect on people outside of AZ they feel the need to do butt in.
These mutants shouldn’t mix politics with sports. But if they really want to ruin the Arizona economy simply because they believe laws should be upheld, then they can send the California Democratic legislature to run the state. They’ll ruin Arizona in no time.
