Officials from BP have successfully tested a chemical that attaches itself to oil and weighs it down to the ocean floor, where there are natural forces that absorb the oil, CNBC has learned.
The oil giant [BP 47.50 -4.65 (-8.92%) ] said it tested the dispersants, which are manufactured by Nalco [NLC 28.80 4.07 (+16.46%) ], last night, and is authorized to begin using it on a larger scale.
BP said it is looking for additional suppliers to begin manufacturing the material in mass quantities.
Nalco told CNBC that it is working to increase production at its Sugarland, Texas, plant.

BP better do something here. Some folks in that company need to go to jail.
This could be devastating to some pristine coastline.
I’m for offshore drilling, but it ticks me off when I read some pretty cheap protection could have kept this from getting as bad and would have stopped the flow earlier. BP should have bothered to put something like that in place.
As usual, I expect the dire predictions will prove incorrect, but regardless, it’s going to be bad.
If this does work, it will be a private industry success and Obama will take all the credit for it. When things are going wrong Obama will say “BLAME BP”, When it’s all fixed, he’ll say “WE” were able to handle the situation.
I think the EPA, FDA, DHS, OSHA, and every other government agency should study this chemical. After many years of clinical testing and reviews, it may be ready for usage in 2020. Environmental groups can then bring legal actions on behalf of the bottom feeders.
He’s a johnny-come-lately. Obama knew about this weeks ago. He was just waiting for the BP CEO to come up to speed. (sarc)
re rush was right...
Good luck
1) Getting enough disperant to cover 1800 square miles, and
2) Getting the EPA to approve it’s use on such a massive scale on fishing grounds without long term studies.
In my opinion, just do it. Don’t wait until you have enough. Any help is better than none. And screw the EPA. Usually I am all for careful research, but this oil will be worse than any chemical used.
I lost count of the times I heard on tv yesterday video of obama and napolitano saying “from day one” or “from the very beginning” . . . over and over and over again.
Interesting timing, really — since at the end of 2009 analysts chose Nalco as a favorite stock of 2010...
Funny how all this may work out for Nalco.
the Enviros I’m sure will file suit because this will kill those giant crustaceans who live on the ocean floor eating dead whale carcases

If you’re referring to the “acoustic switch,” the comments I’ve read indicate that it wouldn’t have helped in any way. The loss of power and hydraulics from the rig should have automatically triggered the BOP, but didn’t. Neither did the “deadman” switch. The comments from industry insiders, etc., feel that the BOP was damaged immediately by debris, either concrete chunks or drill casing blasted through it, damaging the shears or preventing the shears from operating.
The ROVs have been unable to activate the BOP, which would seem to bolster their case for the damage. The “acoustic switch” wouldn’t have helped.
Here’s the site with a lot more information than you’ll see elsewhere. You need to read the comments, not just the article.

You have no clue what you are talking about.

I thought the goal was to get to it (stop the oil from spreading) right at the well so it doesn’t disperse.

My initial thoughts are fire.
that pretty wells takes care of it, doesn’t it?
They tried setting fire to the slick last week - heard nothing about it since.
