Obama Says F-word At Correspondents' Dinner, Posts It At YouTube By Noel Sheppard Created 05/02/2010 - 11:46
Barack Obama said the F-word at the White House Correspondents' Dinner Saturday evening, and the video of his obscenity was posted at YouTube and WhiteHouse.gov.
As he began his comic remarks, the President said:
I wasn't sure that I should actually come tonight. [Vice President Joe] Biden talked me into it. He leaned over and he said, "Mr. President, this is no ordinary dinner. This is a big (whispering) f--king meal."
At 9:09 AM Sunday, a video of the President's routine was published [1] at the White House website after being posted [2] at YouTube some time Saturday evening.
As you can hear in the video, a bleep has been added, but the whispered F-word is still audible (video follows with commentary, joke in first 60 seconds):
As readers, viewers, and those in attendance were aware, this was a joke mocking Biden's F-bomb at the signing of the recently enacted healthcare reform bill when he whispered in the President's ear [2], "This is a big f--king deal."
However, was it appropriate of the President to use that word in public, at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, on live television?
And if the White House was going to post this at YouTube and its website, shouldn't someone have done a better job of making sure the bleep actually covered the obscenity?
This seems especially important as it appeared the networks that aired the dinner properly bleeped his F-word. I was watching C-SPAN and thought the bleep covered it up. I've been informed that CNN and MSNBC also bleeped appropriately, although Fox News's censors may have been a tad early.
This suggests these networks were alerted to the joke, and were on the ready to bleep when necessary.
But did the President have to say "f--king" for the joke to work?
Wouldn't "f-ing," "freaking," or "frigging" have been more appropriate for the most powerful man in the world in a public setting with cameras rolling?
LOL! When I was a kid, if I said the word ‘butty’ (meaning butt), I would be sure to get my mouth washed out with soap!
No class.
Common everyday language in my world!
Stay classy, Obama.
Actually, the FCC had in the past tried to regulate cable and I think it’s a periodic effort.
I say file the complaint anyway. Post it on a blog.
Believe it or not, I think this is a huge deal. I saw last night a WSJ roundtable (on Fox, I think) about how Obama is degrading the presidency with his personal attacks, etc.
This is quick-soundbyte way of explaining this. This wasn’t a stupid remark on an open mic, this was a prepared remark for an event that would be broadcast on national cable television. An event where bytes are often shown on national TV.
So I think this is a nice shorthand symbolic example of the coarseness of the Obama presidency. No president, not even Nixon, not Andrew Jackson, would curse in public remarks. Never.
Who can really blame Obama, though?
He just says what’s on the teleprompter.
Wow. Just wow. Great post & document.
Exactly. Biden's gaffe was an emotional outburst. A product of excess enthusiasm and easily forgiven.
Obama is a strange character.
For all his rough edges, I'd rather be seated next to the V.P. at a dinner party rather than the Prez. Kinda creepy guy.
Berry is a “f—king” joke.
You have to be intelligent to pull off a good joke. Say what you will but George Carlin WAS intelligent.
“I am not going to waste that much time on this POSPOTUS.”
You’d better should. He’s a much better in beeing a comedian then beeing president.
I expect no less.
Similar with Cheney. Carl Levin, after doing something really slimy (I forget what) then decided to do the whole fake smile thing to Cheney and he’d have nothing of it.
Let’s not think about our kids, let’s think about his. Doesn’t somebody who has children the ages of Sasha and Malia have a little sense of how he appears in public?
Every previous Presdident, including slick, knew the importance of humility and act of humbleness in public.
Just like his culture this POS does not offer any positiveness or improvement to America. Not one tiny bit!

First it starts with something harmless like John Ritter pretending to be gay and then...gay marriage.
As GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios said, "Its a critical way toward changing the hearts and minds of America."
First Biden, now Obama and next...your children.
This was just another step down the ladder for America.
Agreed. He is a near perfect negative.
The only tiny grain I see in him that is positive is that he seems to be genuinely fond of and protective towards his youngest daughter.
Other than that . . . a moral void.
I am amazed at the level of crass this Whitehouse portrays on a daily basis. Not a lick of class to any of them!
Low class, 1/2 white trash, POS.
