Hotshot sniper in one-and-a-half mile double kill Michael Smith

A BRITISH Army sniper has set a new sharpshooting distance record by killing two Taliban machinegunners in Afghanistan from more than 1 miles away.

Craig Harrison, a member of the Household Cavalry, killed the insurgents with consecutive shots — even though they were 3,000ft beyond the most effective range of his rifle.

“The first round hit a machinegunner in the stomach and killed him outright,” said Harrison, a Corporal of Horse. “He went straight down and didn’t move.

“The second insurgent grabbed the weapon and turned as my second shot hit him in the side. He went down, too. They were both dead.”

The shooting — which took place while Harrison’s colleagues came under attack — was at such extreme range that the 8.59mm bullets took almost three seconds to reach their target after leaving the barrel of the rifle at almost three times the speed of sound.

I’ll have a search for it and see how much to goes for, I’d love to get it and shoot it again.
we used a SIGP229 and I have that but this rifle would be the jewel

I’ve always wanted a big bore rifle, would love to have a 50BMG. But it is only useful for other than hunting.

My father still has a Winchester .348, but no one likes to shoot it. Loaded heavy it has too much recoil, and brass is a problem.

Have thought about one of the big bore Ruger model 1’s as an option.

Don’t have the money anyway, so that will have to wait.

shooting handguns is one thing, shooting auto is one thing but I love shooting a sniper rifle and seeing if I can get that target over a mile away.

just had a quick look on the internet and now seen anything yet.
what would you say they would go for ?

I calculate three times the speed of sound as 3,350 fps which surprised me. I would have guessed it to be much higher. Three times the speed of sound sounds a lot more impressive to me than 3350 fps.

Yeah, three seconds flying time. Imagine what you could be doing in three seconds: flipping a pancake, scratching an itch, putting on a hat, picking your.....BLAM!

I wonder what arc this projectile had to travel- was it on a Hail Mary path? Man, that's some good shooting.

I have no clue about price. Since they are made in England they may not export them. Citizens there are not allowed to own such things, sad.

I’ll bet you could get one built easy enough, but not sure what type of action you would want if you started from scratch.

Have read that Lilja makes some fine barrels for the purpose. They even make 50BMG barrels.
