Teacher, Aide Charged In Restraining Boy With Autism

INDIANAPOLIS -- A teacher and an aide at Perry Meridian Middle School have been charged with neglect after police said they strapped a student with autism to a chair and left him on the floor.

Veteran teacher Catherine Littleton, 52, and Jeffery Stokes, 27, were charged with battery, criminal confinement and neglect of a dependent in connection with a Feb. 18 incident in a classroom, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Stokes taped socks over the hands of a non-verbal 12-year-old student, strapped the boy's arms to his chest and belted him to a chair. The boy was then tipped over backward in the chair and left on the floor, police said.

"It happened several times over the year, and even though there may be no signs of physical harm, there's concern over the mental anguish he may have gone through," said Sgt. Matt Mount.

Another teacher's aide reported the incident to school administrators, who contacted Child Protective Services, which prompted a police investigation.

I do not believe for a single minute there is ANY conservative POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. Almosr all of the PC mentality, behavior and philosophy is on the left or the far left. That is not to say there might not be some extremism with some folks on the right but that extremism rarely manifests in the public forum. Extremism on the right usually is kept private. That does not include certain stupid proclamations made by some reverends or preachers on the right but there are a lot more of these kinds of extremists on the left who do manifestly exhibit these kinds of pronouncements with pride even as distasteful or outrageous as they are. This has a lot to do with hypocrisy and feigned moral outrage coming from the left.

I consider myself a Reagan Conservative.

Prior to that, I would say that I was an insufferable liberal. I am sad to say, that I voted for McGovern.

When the idea of mainstreaming children with special needs first was instituted, I thought what a great idea.

Boy,I was dumb as rocks.

My wife teaches in a public school.I can’t count the number of times that she has come home in tears because of the things that have been required of her and because she knows that if something goes terribly wrong she will be hung out to dry not only by her principal but by the County Board of Education.

The only thing that keeps her sane is that she now documents every thing asked of her in emails and she only has one more year until early retirement.

“I said I wasn’t sure he was going to suffer any mental anguish- which, of course, is open for debate.”

Not unless you’re the kids parent or doctor. Not nearly enough information to make any kind of intelligent statement otherwise.

“I won’t judge someone until I walk in their shoes. I’m a firm believer that political correctness- be it it liberal or conservative- stifles debate. “

Thats an idiotic statement. They tied the kid to the chair because they didn’t want to deal with him. That is a crime. Your mind is not open, you have no respect for those with special needs.

Public schools have become nothing more than babysitters and propaganda machines that feed the party line to brainwash children into liberal ideology and that is why the public school system in our country is a complete and utter failure and a complete waste of time, money and resources.

Depends on your location. Different school systems, counties, states have different programs.

“I have at times thought we should just scrap public schooling, but then I think, an educated populace really is the greater good.”

No, no. Having an educated populace is why we MUST scrap public schooling.

While most don’t, many do. Arne Duncan had to respond to a government report that found that abuse of special needs children by our highly trained education professionals is epidemic.

You can’t fix government schools any more than you can fix a single payer health care system.

Well said. I’m no expert on autistic kids, but there appears to be a myriad of experts here tonight. Did these two teachers do what was right? Apparently not. Did they criminally abuse the kid- I don’t think so. Parents with autistic kids love their children just as much as anyone else. If someone disagrees with the way they see their child’s affliction, I can certainly understand their resentment. But there are some kids whose condition is so over the top, it is debatable whether they suffer any mental anguish when they’re subdued- whether it’s done out of concern or just to keep them quiet.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Just because autistic people have trouble getting stuff out, doesn’t mean stuff doesn’t get in.

Through the use of keyboards and sign language, they’ve discovered that most autistic people tend to be exceptionally bright.

Probably brighter than you are.

Do not judge. These cases are tough.

I'm with you. For all we know, the kid was acting out, thrashing around, and they placed the chair on its back because otherwise he'd tip it over and hurt himself when it fell. I'm amazed at how many Freepers simply assume all teachers are sadistic weirdos.

I’ve never understood this obsession with wanting to mainstream special needs kids. They turn them over to an average school and we shouldn’t act surprised when something like this happens.

While I am no fan of mainstreaming every handicapped child that comes down the pike, this is NOT the sort of thing we should expect when they are mainstreamed.

We should expect adults to behave like adults, not playground bullies. And we should expect those who put themselves forth as highly trained professionals to act like professionals.

This is the sort of thing we expect from the public education system not because autistic children are mainstreamed but because the public education system attracts the bottom of the barrel class of people.

Einstein, Howard Hughes, and many others, are assumed to have been at least slightly autistic.

Probably Asperger's. It is a mild form of Autism where the person is able to function as a member of society but does have some of the quirks of autism.

“I’m amazed at how many Freepers simply assume all teachers are sadistic weirdos.”

It’s a rampant thought in some cliques on here. All teachers are all evil all the time, all public schools are all evil all the time.

Which is total hogwash to normal people who live in the real world.

Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’

I presume that he was standing in front of a mirror? Because every time I have heard Savage he has been screaming, raging and in general acting like a putz.

Beat that blind child as much as you like, he is not going to be able to color inside the lines.

Whack that deaf kid with a two by four, he still can't whistle back the tune you just played.

Kids who are autistic are just as disabled but some people prefer to be blind to the fact that they need specialize teaching and care.

And that is one of many reasons why Savage is an idiot studying to be a moron and failing.
