1979 oil spill worse than current spill in Gulf region

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Deepwater Horizon platform oil spill may turn out to be the second worst spill from an oil platform in the Gulf region because some say it will never touch what happened in 1979.

In the Bay of Campeche that year, an exploratory well operated by the Mexican National Oil Company blew up and leaked for a full year. It would take the Louisiana oil leak two years to send as much oil into the Gulf as the Mexican well "Ixtoc One" did.

Ixtoc was fouling sandy white beaches of Texas up to a year after the blowup in 1979. The state of Texas kept cleaning and footing the bill when the Mexican National Oil Company would not. This was the last really catastrophic leak of an oil platform in 31 years.

Have to go way back to ‘79 to find one worse. Makes it even more apparent that it is just such a very fortunate disaster for green energy.

There you go ruining a good news story with facts again.

I look at it this way. At least this time its in our back yard so we have control, and we have the best people on the Planet that can find a way to get this thing shut off at the quickest time possible, and then clean up the mess on the beaches.
Like all oil spills there will be environmental damage and cost, but like all the others it will be short lived and the area will return as it is. Travel to the same beaches two years after the clean-up and you will say “what oil spill”.

Unless it is still out there when hurricane season starts, and blows all that oil into New Orleans:)

Travel to the same beaches two years after the clean-up and you will say “what oil spill”.

Do you have any personally experience to back that claim?I remember the mess the Mexican blowout made on the Texan beaches SEVEN YEARS later(1986).

I was on vacation visiting friends at Lake Jackson and decided to have fun at the beaches on the Texas coast near Houston. On the surface, the sand looked fine but if you dug you toes inches below the surface your toes would come back spotted with tar balls and they were damned hard to wash off.The water had a brownish tinge and you felt filthy after you left the water.

There will be damage and it will take longer than “short time”

Heck, the beaches down here (Galveston through Surfside) are still like that...

and worse, now, the beach was really eroded during the Hurricane

Sad to hear that. Guess Lousiana and Miss, Alabama will get that experience too.

However I still believe drilling must continue. It's not like this event is commonplace...IMHO

Agree completely.

The Houston area beaches aren’t covered in oil so much anymore, it’s seaweed, jelly fish, and erosion that’s doing them in now.

...it’s seaweed, jelly fish, and erosion that’s doing them in now.

I heard somewhere that Jellyfish attacks are more common and a greater danger to swimmers than sharks. One reason is many attacks are assumed to be heart attacks or drownings.

Is it true? Can't say definitely but makes one think....
