Glenn Beck's Ratings Collapse

Gillian Reagan

Is Glenn losing his edge? Maybe not.

Fox News' Glenn Beck might be a one-man $32 million media empire (books, radio shows, tours and more!) but what's going on with his marquee Fox News show?

The Los Angeles Times' Joe Flint reports that News Corp.-owned Fox News cable news ratings are still high above the competition. But Glenn Beck's total number of viewers are down by almost 30%, from 2.9 million in January to 2.1 million in April.

Glenn might not be the rising ratings juggernaut month to month, like he has always been. But he's still a powerhouse in the 5 p.m. timeslot. As Joe writes, "the decline in his audience has hardly made a dent on the lead he enjoys for his 5 p.m. festival of emotions. His rivals should hold off a little on popping the Champagne."

[snip]

Here's how the other cable news personalities are doing, year over year, in April:

April 09- April 2010 in the 25-54 demo:

* Fox News' Bill O’Reilly– down 3%

* MSNCB's Rachel Maddow – down 8%

* Fox News' Greta Van Sustren – down 13%

* Fox News' Sean Hannity – down 17%

* MSNBC's Chris Matthews – down 23%

* MSNBC's Headline News – down 26%

* MSNBC's Keith Olbermann – down 28%

* CNN's Wolf Blitzer – down 37%

* CNN's Campbell Brown – down 39%

* CNN's Anderson Cooper – down 41%

* CNN's Larry King – down 46%

Totally. I like Beck, and some days he has some real nuggets in there, But advising people to build a food cellar? Really? Goes into Alex Jones/George Noory territory.

Best parody of him was when Rush had a buzzer that would randomly go off during his show...then Rush would switch to talking about how the Republicans suck.....

You just describe a typical Rush broadcast.

I bet there are 40 mins of commercials per hour during Rush

everyone is going down, it looks like. I predict as soon as a few of them drop completely out, the remaining shows will climb back up.

Interesting comments here, and most make the same point:

Beck talks about difficult things, albeit in a goofy manner, chalkboard and all.

We’re a nation of ostriches. It’s much more comfortable to deny that our way of life is threatened, that there are leaders who are betraying us for personal power.

So it’s hard to watch Beck day after day.

Reality isn’t fun, but fun gets big ratings.

His shows this week have been outstanding.

Same here. When he teamed up with O’Reilly, claimed Democrats were the same as Republicans, and then started slamming birthers, I quit watching.

Rush is amazing. Nobody is as compelling a listen as he is.

Plus, one can only take sarcasm for so long—even when you agree w/the points made with it.

I’m not upset that Glenn is not concerned about obummer’s citizenship status.... What has turned me away from Beck is his attitude toward those that are concerned that our Constitution is being trashed by a usurper posing as President of the United States! With all of the way out, wacky scenarios he covers...and I’m glad he does cover them, why does he trash those mercilessly who care that the Constitution is not upheld concerning qualifications? Doesn’t make sense to me.

Let me get this straight. We are trying to discern why political show ratings are down 15 months after a general election.

????

Here are the numbers for Beck

5PM – P2+ (25-54) (35-64)
Glenn Beck – 2,262,000 viewers (689,000) (1,060,000)
Situation Room—543,000 viewers (141,000) (268,000)
Hardball w/ C. Matthews – 523,000 viewers (122,000) (218,000)
Fast Money – 207,000 viewers (53,000) (91,000)
Showbiz Tonight —181,000 viewers (73,000) (93,000)

Beck has over 2 million viewers a night. The libs would kill for these numbers.

That is exactly what they’re counting on, my FRiend.

This is all part of a strategy for the 2010 midterms.

Look for a lot of stories about how Rush is losing his base, too.

No one likes to hear bad news. But if we are in fact facing a depression that will make the 1930’s look like the 1920’s, as I believe we are, it is critical that we maintain the energy, that we continue to focus on what the communists in power are doing, and that we remain united, educated, and resolved to defeat these bastards.

I don’t like 100% of what Beck does and says, but he is spreading a message that is very important for the survival of the Republic.

He has never been about solutions per say, but about education. His shows have provided an insight into this administration that no other news program has even thought about.

It is not fair to to compare his show with others since he is unique in his presentation. He consistently provides information about the people in charge (actually both parties) which is a welcome breath of fresh air.

I especially like his programs dealing with history. What other show on TV can you actually get the history of the US with any factual presentation?

I have an unfortunate feeling that you ain’t seen nothin yet...if you think this is hell, just wait..

the marxists may be wearing us down, but there are grenades rolling on the floor (economic policy, middle east policy). something has got to give. something big is going to happen.

I have a very uneasy feeling. something really bad is going to happen

Never heard of them before Glenn discussed this today. Anyone else out there covering this? Anyone?

I know where you are coming from. I had to take a break from Glenn. No one out there is connecting the dots like Glenn. No one. Why?

People are sick of hearing gloom and doom. He’s completely negative with no solutions.

If you ever suspect that you have terminal cancer, I suggest you put off the doctor visit as long as possible.
But then, the doctors are likely to be all negative. Don't deal with it.

When a problem is endemic and you put it off as long as you can, expect just defining the problem to be bad news.

You can't put a smiley face on freaking totalitarianism...
