Obama Administration Escalates Response to Gulf Oil Spill
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 29, 2010 2:31 PM EDT | JARED A. FAVOLE And ELIZABETH WILLIAMSON

The White House escalated its response Thursday to the growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, as administration officials said that the disaster could prompt a rethink of President Barack Obama's recently announced proposal to allow expanded offshore oil and gas drilling.

In an afternoon appearance in the Rose Garden, Mr. Obama promised to use "every single available resource" of government to help with the spill.

Federal officials said that the slick is spreading and could make landfall as early as Friday evening. The prospects for slowing the spread of the oil appear dim.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, speaking at a White House briefing, said that the slick "is crossing different regions" and that the federal government would set up a second command center in Mobile, Ala., in addition to an existing command center in Louisiana. The leaking well took 90 days to drill and it could take another 90 days for a relief valve, intended to stop the leak, to be put in, said Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes.

The spill, which could be one of the biggest in U.S. history, threatens to cause significant environmental damage and disruption to business along the Gulf Coast. It also could change the dynamics of an energy-policy debate in the U.S. Capitol.

This is nothing.

Nothing if you don't live here. Nothing if you don't depend on the estuaries and coastal marshes for your livelihood or for storm protection.

the oil spill is a lousy 500,000 barrels (even including the next 90 days)

Let's hope not; that would be the equivalent of 2 Valdez oil spills.

The Valdez oil spill was 11 MILLION.!!!!

Gallons, not barrels. Your math is off by a factor of 42.

Thanks Romulus.

Rogertarp, don't be an idiot. I am an enviro-whacko's worst enemy, but I consider myself a good steward, and friend of industry. To cheer death and destruction coming is nothing to cheer about. Pray that industry can get this under control as soon as possible, and that it perhaps burning the spill may work. Doesn't look good right now.

Is it possible that you meant gallons instead of barrels?

Not to engage in too much tinfoil here, but according to this story on the 22nd, a worker said there was one explosion, but no sizable fire, then THREE HOURS LATER, another, bigger explosion that started the fire that took down the rig... How does that happen over a three-hour gap? The first explosion must have been “contained” or else they would have evacuated the rig immediately. So what set off the second explosion?

Seems like sabotage to me. i.e., an inside job.

Am I the only one thinking sabotage? No, I would like to see the evedience supporting the root cause of this issue. It's just too convenient of an event for a process that has been done thousands of times without such an issue.

You know, that’s what I thought as well. Doesn’t this oil spill come at a completely convenient time. I’m sure Bill Ayers could have made some calls....

An offshore drilling rig is a pretty highly controlled environment. Care to speculate how a saboteur is going to get on board, get an explosive device down the hole, and then trigger it, with no one noticing or challenging him? Don't you think BP keeps logs of who comes and goes on the drilling deck? Let's not get hysterical here. This is an industrial accident.
