OMAHA, Neb. -- An armed robber was shot and killed in an Omaha business Monday night, police said. Investigators said a customer intervened and fired on the gunman.

The robbery took place at the Walgreen’s store at 61st Street and Northwest Radial Highway at 8:50 p.m.

Police said two masked individuals walked into the store. One of them was armed with a short shotgun. The gunman pointed the weapon at customers and at the clerk behind the counter.

A man who had a permit to carry a gun saw the robber point the weapon at the clerk and pulled out his handgun and shot the suspect multiple times, police said. The robber stumbled out of the store and collapsed.

The wounded robber was taken to Creighton University Medical Center, where he later died.

I feel sorry for the shooter.

Good post. While I may fantasize about blowing numerous holes in a bad guy - actually doing so is another matter. He was forced into that situation, he did nothting to create the situation, he could have been a victim as some criminals murder witnesses.

Anyway you look at it, he's a hero - but will have this memory to carry with him the rest of his life. What should have been a routine run to the store, turned into a traumatic event that will haunt him the rest of his life.

I’m not so sure. There have been at least 14 shooting deaths related to Omaha’s North side since the beginning of the year. The residents of the area are upset and want to change the dynamic but of course they have already started out by blaming lack of jobs, the dropout rate, not enough money invested in North Omaha and they don’t think that having more police presence is the answer. Who the hell wants to raise a business in an area where crime is rampant and the residents don’t want to take action against their “brothers”. The blame goes everywhere but where the responsibility really lies; them. They want to blame someone else rather than take responsibility for what goes on in their own neighborhoods.

Good. The unnamed defender should be given a good citizenship award for his quick action and steady hand.

May he find peace in the sure knowledge he saved innocent lives by dispatching one who chose to die as an outlaw.

I bet it's quite traumatic to kill another human being. Never been in a robbery, but I'm guessing it's fear and adrenalin pulling the trigger.

On the upside, I'd guess this makes the criminals out there thing again. Might be worth more than adding a new precinct of police in suppressing robberies for a while.

How would he have felt if he did nothing and the perp killed a clerk or customer? He WAS in a position to do something about the situation...and he did. Yeah, it will be a real memory bitch to carry around but, bottom line, the criminal really killed himself.

The 2nd amendment gives us the right to bear arms but leaves it to the states and localities to set up regulations for ownership or not.

The localities cannot keep a law-abiding citizen from owning a weapon but they can place rules (as in well regulated militia) on individually held weapons.

I would not go beyond the literal interpretation of the Constitution on this issue.

The second robbery suspect was detained* until police arrived. The 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

*By gunpoint I am sure. Aren't weapons handy?

He was probably just about to turn his life around and go back to school and get a job. He just needed more time.

He now has eternity.

” ... the criminal really killed himself.”

Exactly. The minute the perp walked into the drugstore with a gun and the intent to use it, if necessary, to commit robbery, he accepted the risk of being killed instead.

The 2nd amendment gives us the right to bear arms

sorry, but the thought police must intervene and remind everyone that our inalienable Rights come from The Creator, not a legal document...

This is Warren Buffet’s home town. It’s hard to believe with a billionaire living there, one who cares so much for the “little people,” one who gives millions to charities supposedly to help the disenfranchised, who believes “rich people,” should pay more taxes (unless those rich people are him and have set up foundations to avoid taxes) that there could even be bad guys who want to steal in his own home town!

Where is he, with all his millions, when he could be giving money to these people who just want some stuff, and he could just give them the money to get their stuff so they wouldn’t have to steal? Good grief, with his dough, he could give every poor person in Omaha $50,000 each without even having to touch his principal.

Music to my ears. Good shooting, good Samaritan.

Always the qualifier “...who possessed a concealed handgun permit...”. I couldn’t care less if a citizen had any permit or not when he/she is defending innocent people.

You'd think. I just wish the “Oracle” would bestow some of his financial acumen on the city fathers. But no, they had to build a publicly funded hotel and new baseball stadium. Quite the boon to business it will be. Meanwhile the city's in the red due to public employee salary, benefits, and retirement just like everyplace else. Omaha, the Mecca of crony capitalism.

I fail to see how the CC permit is not an infraction on the 2nd Ammendment.

Agree entirely, mate! 2nd Amendment "...shall not be infringed" is all too often ignored.

Since Mr. McCullough performed a great service, they really should dismiss the trivial matter of the concealment.
